j news AND NOTES

_ Tho staff of the Canterbury Jockey Club will bo busily engaged to-day, as final payments for the New Zealand Cup, Stewards’ Handicap, Welcome Stakes, Derby and Oaks, and acceptances for the Spring Hurdle Handicap,' Riccarton Welter Handicap and Linwood Handicap will close at 8 p.m.

There was little work of interest at Riccarton yesterday, the horses with engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting next week being given steady pacing, with a few short sprints Jo lend slight variety to tho proceedings. Provided the weather is fine, however, there should be some good gallops this morning, as many of the visiting horses will be sent nlong at top. Acceptances closed yesterday for the first day of tbo Now Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, and the response made by owners leaves little doubt regarding the success of the _ fixture, i'randocia was the only defection from the New Zealand Trotting Cup, leaving twelve horses still engaged, representing the best class in the Dominion. J. Bryce still has Cathedral Chimes,' Sherwood and Matchlight, while B. Jarden has Author Dillon and John Dillon in the field, and the popular opinion is that one of these stables will provide tho winner. Tho other horses engaged, however, cannot be dismissed lightly, and all the indications point to a highclass contest. Good acceptances have also been received for most of tho other events, ami though some of the fields will not be particularly large, the quality of the competitors will ensure sport of the best character.

Sweet Tipperary, American Beauty and Swaneo River were, scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring meeting at 9.45 a.m. yesterday: R- J. Mason returned home yesterday from Wellington with Gloaming, Elcus and Afterglow. The lastnamed pair have only been away about a week, for the Trentham fixture, but Gloaming and his trainer have been absent for some mouths, having done a, successful campaign in. Sydney since they were last at Riccarton.. Yesterday’s ferry steamer from Wellington had thirty-two horses «n board, most of them being North Island competitors for tho Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting to be held next week. Among them word Murihiku, Affectation, Rose Wreath. Torfreda, Hymestra. Snub, Nanmi, Mascot, Menelaus, Cooing, Jerona, Soifanelta. Sasanof, Tsunami, Lady Ball, Lalla Rookh, Good Day, Cashmere, Fluency, Parisian Diamond. Palm Oil. Rosary, Acre, Client, Amethus, Moutoa Ivanova and Oratress..

The Hawke’s bay trainer G. Jones, lias brought seven horses to Riccarton, this being the. largest of the visiting teams engaged at the meeting next week. Next in point of size are the contingents of J. W. Lowe and F. Tilley, each of whom has five horses under In's charge, while J. T. Jamieson, W. Hawthorn and S. Reid have teams of four.

A Press Association message from Melbourne “'says that Risingham lias been scratched from the Melbourne Cun.
