SPORTING.
NEWS AND NOTES. Mr A. Fleming has not yet definitely decided when Our Thorpe will attack tho mile record. Ho inspected the Addington track on Wednesday but found that it was not nearly in order for record-breaking, though it was improving fast from tho recent soaking. If the conditions are favourable, tho trial may take place this morning, but this is far from, being certain. The lliccarton tracks were in good order yesterday, the- number seven grass providing excellent going for horses going fast, and somo useful work was accomplished, most of the trainers sending their charges along ut a solid pace. Mr G. L. Stead's- two-yoar-old colt Surveyor, by Nassau—Pedometer, will bo sent to Riccarton this week and placed under the care of M. Hobbs, who will train the youngster until the return of R. D. O'Donnell from Australia. W. Hobbs is in chargo at Yaldhurst in O'Donnoll's absence,' having Melee, and the two-year-olds Golden Croaier and Oranze Bitters in work. Surveyor, however, is a highly strung colt, whose attendant, H. Were, having just completed his apprenticeship, has been engaged to ride for Mr W. A. Nieholls. This influenced Mr Stead in making special arrangements for Surveyor. Were will remain with the colt, while still being available to ride Mr Nicholls's horses in their work and. their races.
Tho lliccarton.itrai'nevs are beginning to soncl their two-year-olds along in earnest how. Those wanted for early engagements will have to race in about six weeks, so., that there is no time to waste. Tho youngsters are worked at odd hours, so that it is not easy to follow them all in their training efforts, but there are a few that show considerable promise. M. Hobbs has a trio in commission for Mr E. 8. Lufctrell. Flight Commander (Martian — Nerve) should turn out well. He has a bold stylo of galloping, «nd already shows a lot of speed, while the fact that h« is a half-brother to Balboa will bo an additional recommendation to many people, Mr C. G. Dalgety has a strong team—five in number, including a sister to Warstep and a brother to Snub. The pick of this stable at) present, however, is the filly by Sanquhar from Nantes (dam of Nanna). She is a rare cut of a galloper, and Bhe has only to go on as she is doing to piny a prominent part in the big two-year-old events of the spring." So far as can be judged, Sanquhar is going to leave speedy horses,
his owner, Sir George Clifford, having a very promising colt by the English sire among his eight juveniles. This is Strathglass, from Telescope (dnm ot Long Range). He is a trifle backward, but he shnpes well. The colt by Autumnus —Kirriemuir is another nico youngster, but colds and miner ailments are hindering the preparation of tho Chokebore Lodge two-year-olds at present. P. V. Mason is working a couple, including a sister to Nones, but thej have not dono enough to provide a relinble line. F. D. Jones has been busy with Mustard Pot, by General Latoiir—Prudish (dam of Varnish), ptkl he shapes like being a useful sort. Theso are a few of the locally-trained juveniles who may bo regarded, on the whole, as distinctly promising. .
