Miss- Gerard returned to Christchurch on Saturday after a holiday spent in the North Island. Mrs Chaffey left on Saturday for North Canterbury, where she expects to* stay for several weeks. iMiss Marjorie Boulton, Chester Street, has returned to her home- after I a holiday spent in the North Island. Amongst the Christchurch girls who ' nrt< doing excellent war work in England is Miss Alys Gower Burns. For a long time Miss Burns was working m a munition factory in England, d'here she got on so well that she was made overseer in the finishing room. She was advised to take a rest from idle trying work, and in order to get a complete change she learnt motor driving, and succeeded in passing an examination and obtaining a certificate, which enabled her to become a member of the Royal Motor Air Eofce, and she is now busily engaged in driving motorcars, presumably in connection with aerodrome transportation. Invitations have now been issued for the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association annual ball, the proceeds of which are to go towards a Memorial Club. The ball is to take place in the Colosseum on Tuesday, September 3. The committee consists of. Mcsdames A. Boyle, R. A. Chaffey. C, G. Dalgety, H. Holland, George Rhodes and Stevenson, Misses Elsie Cooper and Tessa Reading. Messrs W. E. D. Bishop, C. G. Dalgety, E. L. Cheesman, V. M. Edgar, W. H. Mayes and W. M. Reid. The treasurer is Mr N. B. M'Callum and the secretary Mr C. W. Green. Ballantyne's art department is now displaying a choice selection of silk bags for street or theatre use, made in good quality silk in various rich colourings; prices 10s Gd, 12s (id and 17s 6d each, and this' department has also just received a further selection of the latest designs in transfers. X DANCE % A delightful dance was given on Saturday evening, at her residence in Latimer Square, by Mrs Wynn-Williams, the occasion being the birthday of her daughter Ethel. The houso was decor- ; ated with beautiful spring Mowers. Supper was served in the lounge. Mrs I Wynu-Williams wore- a black satin gown, and Miss Ethel Wynn-Williams wore a smart frock of blue chiffon taffetas, with emerald green and gold beaded embroidery. FANCY DRESS PANOE AT KAIAPOI. ' A plain and fancy dress dance, promoted by the lvaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigade in aid of the brigade's social fund, was held in the Drill Hall on Friday night. There was a large -attendance, considerably over one hundred couples taking part in the dancing.
