SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. Many of tho horses who are engaged at the approaching meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club are very backward at present, on account of the* recent spell of wet weather, which left the tracks unfit for fast work. The big track on tho Metropolitan Club's course at Addmgton will bo open to-day. tat it will only be available for horses engaged at the meeting to be held this month.

The drying winds experienced during the last few days have, had a beneficial effect on the ground at Riccarton. The ordinary tracks aro drying up fast, and the inside of the trial grass, where the fast work was dono on Saturday, provided good going, though it was a trifle dead. The conditions wore mild, and there was a very large crowd of spectators.

Kauri King and Ibex have arrived from the north to fulfil engagements at tho Grand National meeting.

According to a northern report H. Gray's rheumatism is no better and tho crack horseman will not be riding at the Grand National meeting. A very satisfactory list of acceptances was received on Saturday for the principal events at tho Grand National meeting. With fifteen horses remaining in the Grand National Steeplechase and a similar number in the Grand National Hurdle Handicap, the fields for tho two big jumping races promise to be quite as largo as last year, when there were eleven and ten competitors respectively. There are twenty-mine acceptors for the Winter Cup, that being the number of starters which the race attracted last year. Apart from the probable size of th e fields, the jumping races bear an interesting appearance, as tho horses engaged include practically all tho best performers in the Dominion.
