SUBURBAN TRAINS.
THE IMPROVED SERVICES. •
[From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, January 31. From what can be gathered in official quarters, the improvements in the suburban train services promised by the Government will be of modest dimensions. The main aim will be to do away with the serious inconvenience caused by cutting out the suburbs of the big cities from communication with town after about 6 p.m. In most cases about two trains will be run in each direction after this hour, but there is no idea of resuming the full service of pre-war times.
The staff question is hardly as serious to-day, with the restricted services, as that or the coal supply. It is an open secret that the Railway Department is running on small supplies of steam coal, and has not been successful in improving the position. Unless more coal is obtainable the Department may have to again review the whole of the train services with the object of further economising in coal.
