BELGIAN FUND.
i ASHBURTON COMMITTEE,
A meeting of the Ashburton Belgian Relief Fund Committee was held on , Tuesday afternoon to decide what 1 should be done with the credit balance , in hand subscribed for the relief of the Belgians. Mr H. F. Nicoll presided. A letter was read from tho Minister of Internal Affairs stating that tho National Committee for Relief in Belgium had suspended appeals to the public of the British Empire for the relief of Belgian inhabitants of territory in alien enemy occupation, ns the United States Government had assumed all financial responsibility for this work. The treasurer submitted a statement which showed that £24.138 16s 8d had been subscribed, and £23,390 15s M had been forwarded to the Christchurch centre. The expenses of the fete and carnival aggregated £368 15s lOd. The sum of £350. had been invested at call, and the credit balance at- the bank was £29 making a total credit of £379 5s W. • !■ Tho chairman reported that a substantial sura was now being held for the fund hj the Christchurch centre, and that no money had been sent forward since January last. The centro had decided to place the money on deposit until such tin;e as it was required. It was unanimously decided to'invest the balance in hand with the Bank of Now Zealand. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote statins that tho regular manner in which tho returns had been forwarded from Ashburton had been much appreciated, and the consistent good work bv the honorary secretary (Mr J. B. Christian) in that respect had been of real assistance to fcho Department.
