MOUNT HERBERT. Tho Mount Herbert County Council met in the Council Chambers, Purau. on Monday • present—Messrs Orton Bradley (chairman), A. R. Fleming, G. Steele, L. M. Wilson, W. H. Firmston, J. Hunter and R. Allan. The chairman moved a vote of condolence with N Mr A. R. and. Mrs Fleming: in the loss of their only son, Lieutenant G. Fleming, who was recently killed in action in France. The motion was passed in silence, members standing. There being only one rate defaulter in the county, the clerk was instructed to take legal proceedings at once. . Tho clerk was also instructed to write to the Lyttelton Borough Council calling its attention to the had state of the road along the boundary of the Diamond Harbour estate. The chairman proposed tho following motion:—"That owing to the lar?e annual sums required by hospital and charitable aid boards for the purpose of replacing old buildings and for extending institutions to meet the demand of an increasing population, this council desires to ropresent to the Minister of Internal Affairs tho need for an amendment to the Hospital ■aM Charitable Institutions Act, enabling hoards to borrow money for capital expenditure, due safeguards being provided against over , borrowin"." The motion was carried, and it was decided that a copy should be forwarded to coun*v councils, and other local bodies throughout the Dominion with a request that, sfroulci they erdorse it, representations be made to the "various members of Parliament, asking them to ur?e upon the Minister the need for sneli amendment to the Act under notice.
