WAIMAKARIRI KIVER BOARD.
The South Waimakariri River Board met yesterday; present—Messrs W. P. Spencer (chairman), C. H. Opie, H. Peryman, H. Bowden, J. Leslie, F. E. Jones, C. Burgess and A. S. Bruce. Mr Peryman, referring to the matter of the spread of gorse and broom on the board's reserves, stated that on a recent visit to Akaroa he had observed that the nuisance had been kept well down by the Angora goats there. A member humorously suggested that the board should procure a flock of the goats with the idea of making the scheme a paying concern. The matter of dealing with the trouble was referred to the Gorse Committee.
The overseer reported that there had not been any flood in the river since June 25. The river was still coming in a little at the Seven-mile Peg and at Stewart's Gully. There had been no change in the river at Halkett. Gorse was reported to be spreading rapidly in certain places. Marram grass would be planted on sandhills at Stewart's Gully towards the, end of the month. Reference was made to grubbing and other works done.
The report and suggestions made were adopted and agreed to. The question of appointing a foreman was considered, and F. Jesson, who had been carrying out the duties of actingforeman, was appointed.
