COUNTY COUNCILS.

AKAROA. The Akaroa County Council met on Saturday at Duvauchelles; present—Messrs J. K. Thicker (chairman), J. t>. Bruce, E. Hoy, T. Conway and C. Thaoker. Correspondence wag read from the Patriotic Couimittoe. Christchurch. regarding the election of a representative tor tho Peninsula, staling that the executive would elect a representative. Members of tho council voiced their objection, as they had proposed Mr Priest, and considered that as they were a contributinpr body they should have the right of election. Mr 3. electrical expert, wrote, stating that tho report on the Lake Coleridgo scheme for the Peninsula .was ready, and that he would attend at the next meeting of the council. It was decided to circulate the report amongst the members before the next meeting. The matter of securing a dwelling for the foreman, also ,a paddock for tho horses, was discussed, and it was decided to obtain information, and report to the next meeting. Accounts presented for payment totalled £96 8s Id, WAIPARA. The Waiparc, County Council met on Saturday; present—Messrs It. Evans (chairman), G. Rutherford, W. W. M'Kae, T. E. L. Roberta, K. D. Campbell and xi. H. Holland. The clerk reported that the work of constructing- tie Lower limuivui traffic bridge was progressing more satisfactorily. All the piles wore now driven, and fair progress was being made with the super-strucuire. Mr A. Hadecke, the contractor, was seriously ill, but arrangements had been made for the work to be completed. The first Greta Bridgo had been completed, and would prove of great benefit to travellers on the Cheviot Road. It was resolved that ratepayers should bo notified that 10 per cent would be imposed on all rates unpaid on February IS. It was agreed that the dog tax should be collected by the clerk, the fee to be the samo as in previous years, sheep and rabbit dogs 2s 6d, sporting dogs 10s, all dogs to be registered by June 30. It was resolved that a letter of sympathy should be sent to Mrs Hadecke, owing to the serious condition of her husband.

Mr A. Hyde wrote, asking: for the road to be formed to the new brictec. it was resolved that Mr Hyde should be informed that the council was aware of the necessity of the road, and that tho matter was receiving the necessary consideration. It was decided thai the question of joining in the Belgian and Red Cross Festival should be considered at the next meeting. The Cheviot County Council wrote, caking for support in a scheme to get the Government to assist in forming a direct route from the Humnni Traffic Bridge toScargill by way of Ethelton, as in its opinion tho road through the Gretas could never be made a good cue. It was resolved that the matter would need careful consideration before a decision cou.'d be arrived at. In tho meantime' all data would be procured and the matter gone into at the next mesting. The Board of Governors of the Amberley Technical School wrote, asking for a grant in connection with its funds. It was resolved that as the school was practically out of touch with this county, tho council could net see its way clear to make <i grant On the motion of Mr MVRae, the followin? resolution was carried unanimously:

" Tba,t this council puts on record.its appreciation of the efficient and impartial way Constable Packer has carried out his duties in this district. Order has been improver, and the constable has rendered good service in findinjr out where assistance was required, and in directing men to where'work con'd be obtained, instead of having them idling about tho townships."
