MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) Agnes M'Callum, charged with selling adulterated, cream to Mark Kershaw, an inspector under the Food and Drugs Act, admitted tho sale, but said that the cream was exactly as she reiceved it from a dairy company. Mr S. G. Raymond, K.C., for the prosecution, applied for an adjournment for a week to allow of the attendance of the inspector. The application was granted. Dainties Ltd. were charged with failing to pay wages in full at proper intervals, and with employing persons under the age of sixteen without certificates from the inspector. The defendant firm was not represented, and tho prosecuting inspector stated that he had been informed by the defendant firm's solicitors that the charges would not be defended. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate inflicted a fine of 20s in each of two cases. J W. Smith, baker, charged •with failing to keep a proper wages and overtime book, did not appear, and was fined 40s and costs. J, Henderson (Mr Cassidy) was charged with failing to keen a wages and 'overtime book, and with working female employees overtimo without a permit. Mr Cassidy said that defendant was now keeping n proper book, and had paid overtime rates to hi* female employees. The prosecuting inspector stated that it was necessary for application to bo mado.for penmts in each case of overtime,, as the amount of overtime per annum was limited by .statue. A fine of 20s was inflicted on each charge. • , , Elizabeth Ann Curio tt proceeded against her husband, Huston Curlott (Mr Rowe) on charges that he molested her during the currency of a separation order by watching her dwelling, and that he" had failed to make payment of £0 6s costs awarded' against him in previous proceedings between the parties. Huston'Curlott said he could explain why he did not pay costs. Ho entered the witness box and said the police had arrested him/ searched him and locked him in a padded cell for half a dav. Therefore he would not • pav the costs, "not a shilling." The Magistrate said that a sentence of one month's imprisonment, in lieu of immediate payment, would be inflicted. In regard to the second charge the Magistrate, after hearing evidence, said ho would adjourn the case till December * 15. If defendant further molested plaintiff in the meantime, concluded Mr Bailey, he would know how to deal with the matter. (Before Mr J. H. Seager, J.P.. and Mr W. S. Loveil Smith, .T.P.) Anthony Abbott, alias Thomas King, charged with the theft on October 8 last of £l6 10s, the property of Roland John Hassall, was remanded till November 29. For cycling at night without a light William Allan Cherry and Conrad Cherry were convicted and ordered to pay costs. David Philpott was fined 7s and costs. For driving a motor-car without a certificate John Robert Gracia was lined 5s and costs. Thomas H. Strahan on a similar charge, was similarly dealt, with. For motoring at excessive speed Leslie W. Broadhead and William V. Howell • were each fined 10s. Horace Harrow, George Sevicke Jones and Cecil V. Whitta were each fined 20s. Alexander Martin, an old offender, was fined 20s, in default seven days' imprisonment, on a charge of drunken- | ncss. METHVEN. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presided at tho Methven Magistrate's Court on Thursday. James Bennett (Mr Dart)., a Seuior Cadet, applied for exemption from drill on the grounds that ho could not parade owing to tho drill being held other than on bis half-holiday. : The Magistrate, after hearing the evidence of Sergeant-Major Tozer, refused the application, on tho grounds that other boys in the town were attending drill under similar conditions. Templeton and Smith (Mr Dart) claimed £2l from E. T. Gondry (Mr Buchanan), being balance due on a bush-felling contract. Defendant raised tho point of overcharge in regard to measurement, which was upheld by the Magistrate, who gave judgment for defendant. ASHBURTON. Mr G. W, Andrews, J.P., and 'Mr W. H. Rundlc, J.P., presided at the Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday. Herbert Charles Ooldeshaw was fined os and costs for leaving an itnlighted obstruction on tho road after dark.
