AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
NORTH OTAGO. [From Or* Correspondent.] OAMARU, November 17. The show concluded to-day in fine weather, ■with' nn attendance fully up to the level of that of last year. The business of the day' °was , the judging of draught horses; of which the entry was the smallest known for half a century, and the section would have been poor indeed had not Mr H. E. Watson (Tai Tapu). Mr E. E. Jenkins (Waddington) and other Canterbury exhibitors entered fairly freely. Only three entries came forward, in the senior section. The first prize was awarded to Mr J. o'’Brien’s Baron Wigton, which- subsequently was pronounced champion. Mr A. Dalgleish’s Fyvie Count was placed second and nominated reserve champion. Mr P. W. Borne’s Lord Kitchener was third. Mr O’Brien., was the only exhibitor of three-, year-olds, with a good pair. lii .two-year-olds Mr O’Brien, with two Canter-bury-bred colts, Baron Blaeon and Ned Blaeon, won first and second ' against Mr W. Gardiner's Robin the Laird." Mr Dalgleish’s; Fyvie Count, aided by prizetakers,. beat Mr Gardiner’s former champion. Baron Fyvie in the section for entire with three of his progeny. Mr H. E. B. Watson’s champion, Mona Ronald was the only brood mare. In dry mares Air Watson’s champion Eileen beat Air J. R. Mitchell’s Gyp. There was a good ring of three-year-old fillies. ' Air W. Gardiner’s Rose oi’Allandale led, followed by Air J. Alahoney's daughter of Agitator. For third place the judges reversed the> Waimate judgment by placing Air P--W. Borrie’s Countess Rowena m front of the same owner’s Rose Graceful. Two-vear-old fillies were an exceptionally good lot. Air E. Jenkins won with Lady Lonsdale, the third prize filly at-Christchurch hist week, Mr V. Dunbar supplying the other place fillies. Mr Gardiner’s Kate M’Bnde was the only yearling filly shown. Geld- • ings werg very creditable, and Mr 'Brown (Waimate) took two out of three r of' the first awards, also securing fii’st.. .f0r.... mare or gelding suitable- for ,the transport service. jMr Watson exhibited. a pair of mares, Alona Ronald and Eileen, which were subsequently .placed respectively first and second for best’ walking horse, defeating Air A. Brown’s ■•Billy, ■ the Waimato winner. For the •female championship, the contest lay between Mr • Watson’s two mares, and special interest was given to it by the • knowledge of the Christchurch decision last week. That decision was reversed, Mona Repaid, last years Christchurch champion mare, being declared champion, with Eileen as reserve. Competitions . occupied the greater part of the afternoon. In the hunter * class, up to 14st, Air Thomas Ilobbs’s Kowa was placed first, followed by-Alias D. Keith’s Traquair and Aliss B. Orton’s Ranji- In the hunter class up to list- Aliss A. E. Rhodes won. with Major Webb', Aliss Keith’s Traquair being second and Air W. Clyma’s Happy Jack third. v There were only three competitors in the highest jump eyent.. Air Clyma’s Happy Jack cleared the wall at sft 4in and won. Miss Keith’s Dr Bill and Air •.S. Dixon’s Redwing both, did ,sft'2in but failed at a greater height, and divided second prize. Air Aitcheson won first and second, prizes for the pony jumping. The contest for the prize in the best lady rider event created considerable interest. After several tests the judges selected Aliss D. Keith and Aliss. B. Orton, and awarded to each a first prize. In milking Mr J. Frew’s Ayrshire cow Deannie (33.41 b. milk, and a butter return of 1.621 b butter-fat) wpn both events, Mr A. Selworth’s Holstein, Longbeach IV., being second in both, with 3341 b milk and 1.131 b biflter-fat.
