THE TELEGRAPH WIRES

COMMUNICATION WITH THE NORTH ISLAND. STATEMENT BY POSTMASTER- . GENERAL. , Dr Thacker, M.P., ha# received the following letter from the Hon Dr R. M’Nab, Acting-Postmaster-General, in reply to a. telegram he sent on September 15, drawing attention to interruption of telegraphic communication with tho North Island after tl*e recent severe 6torms:— “ I have the honour to inform you that I have had a report furnished on the" matter, and am satisfied that strenuous efforts wore made by the Department's officers to quickly restore coiiimunication. The matter of providing alternative routes and strengthening existing lines is cdhtinually receiving attention, but the question is largely ono of expense. Tfyo cost of a cable would be prohibitive. In every country of tho world communication by overhead wires is subject to interference by weather conditions, no matter how strong the lines are.”
