“OUR DAY.”
RED CROSS APPEAL. WEATHER HANDICAPS STREET COLLECTIONS. OVER £1640 REALISED IN CITY. Tho “Our Day” Red Cross Appeal C'ommil tee’s very complete and elaborate arrangements for ycsteiday’s street collection wero lacking only in one particular. By some oversight t)ie Clerk of the Weather was not ‘‘squared” to provide fine weather. At 8 a.m., when the committee and collectors met at the Chamber of Commerce to decide upon tho routine for tho day, there was every appearance of a fair day. The sun shone dimly through thin clouds, and there was blue sky to tho south-west. Emboldened by this promise of favour on tho part ,ot the weather authorities, the committee decided to go ahead with tho collection, but a soft drizzle of rain sot in shortly after nine o'clock and continued at intervals during the day and evening, with tho result tout the city streets were icss crowded than usual, and badgesellers, who congregated [ thickly on every corner, had a comparatively Bmali. held for their efforts to coax money into their .collecting-boxes. Despite the discouraging weather, the various enterprises organised in' connection with the appeal were energetically prosecuted. A Ing marqueo was erected at the south side of the Godley Statue railings, and produce and confectionery were sold there by many willing helpers. The Overseas Club and Roman, Catholic Red Cross Branch each busi-ness-liko stalls in front of the Cathedral, and an attractively decorated little stall, at which a varioty of usoful and ornamental articles were sold at a flat rate of one shilling apiece, was conducted in front of Broacnvay s s, in Cathedral Square, by girls of the Young Women’s Christian Association. Guessing competitions wero held at the Roman Catholic Red Cross stall, tho winners being as. follow:—Ham, Mr A. L. Smith; cake, Miss Gibson; doll. Miss Curtis. Guessing competitions were also a feature of the Oversias Club’s stall, and -met with much financial sue’cess. ■ Mr Peter Trolove and Mr E. Nordon oonc]ucted a novelty stall in Cathedral square, in . front of Barnett’s chemist establishment, the attraction being the manufacture of name designs in aluminium at a small cost.* Tho sum of £23 11s was taken at the stall. During the morning Messrs Chadwick and Campbell, concertina specialists, .low appearing at the Opera House, played in the streets in aid of the fund and netted about £l6. Concerts were given by Mr Bert Le Blanc’s. Revue Company, also of tho Opera House, on the balconies of the United Service, White Hart and Warner’s Hotels, and the committee expresses itself as especially grateful for the assistance thus given. A deputation of very tiny children from the infant classes at the East Chhriotchurch School waited on the committee at the Chamber of Commerce yes ten lay and thrust upon the tellers a bag containing 600 pennies, collected by the children of the classes. The iittle ones wero regaled with tea and cakes and went forth with an add:d sense of their importance in the cell erne of mundane things. The result of the day’s operations in the city was the sum of £1642 11s. The items were as follow: £ s. d.
. Total - * • £1642 11 0 The committee and stallholders lustnight- expressed satisfaction at the liberal support from the public, which greatly lightened .the work of those engaged in selling badges, produce and other articles. It is believed that, if the weather had been more propitious, tin. sum taken would have been very much larger. The heavy casualty lists will make increased demands on theRed. Cross work, and- another ‘ appeal will bo / made to the public soon. ADDITIONAL SUBSCRIPTIONS.
