THE ADDINGTON YARDS.

STOCK-DRIVING THROUGH RIOCARTON. BURGESSES OBJECT TO COUNTY COUNCIL’S MOTIONS. The agitation for the removal of iho Addington saleyards cropped up at Thursday night’s meeting of the Riccarton Burgesses’ Association, the subject being introduced by Mr Hean. Mr Hean said he had read in the papers of tho protests ■ made by various outside local bodies against tho now regulations framed by tbe Riccarton Borough Council to deal with tho driving of stock along the streets of the borough. The only fault in the bylaws, in tho speaker’s opinion, was that they were not drastic enough. Somo' of the County Councillors evidently thought otherwise. But what right had the Akaroa County Council, or the Darfield, Ashburton and Culverden local bodies to dictate what __ this Borough Council should do? “We are the people,” he said “who have to make the Riccarton borough roads and pay for their upkeep, and ■ then these men from Akaroa and other places come along with their cattle and sheep and pull tho roads to pieces.” He moved—“ That this meeting of the Riccarton, Burgesses’ Association heartily supports the action of the Borough Council in its efforts to deal with the question oi stock-driving in the streets.”

Mr Staunton seconded the motion. Mo G. White said that the upsetting of the first sot of by-laws drafted had cost the Riccarton borough about £l7O. He. hoped that the new set would stand. It was quite easily understood that the farmers would use' every effort to keep open a road for their stock to tho yards, but they were nob the only people interested. Another speaker said “ the fun would begin next week,” and as these by-laws had been framed in conformity with the judgment of the Court of Appeal there seemed every chance ‘of their being upheld. The' motion was unanimously earned', and a copy was ordered tO' be forwarded to the Riccarton Borough Council.
