SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. When light rain &et in early on Saturday there was every prospect that the tracks at Riccarton would receive a much-needed soaking. Unfortunately, however, the weather soon cleared again bofore any material benefit, had been dono. The number six grass and the tan were open, and both provided fair going. Mare Anthony, who bears a solid appearance, was responsible for a good gallop over a mile on Thursday, and his task on Saturday was of a milder character. With Countess Tolstoi as a companion, he strode out freely over a mile, being under a strong pull all the ■nay. Ho will make his first appearance for the season at the Aehburton meeting this week, and he is a popular fancy for the chief event. Battle Eve and Good Hqpe were associated in a gallop over seven furlongs on Saturday and registered a fair performance after keeping together all th> way. The pace was solid in the early stages but they were stopping over the last furlong. The three-year-old colt Wrestler, by Antagonist, has been responsible for some smart track performances lately, and he got t;> the end of six furlongs on Saturday in good style. There is no doubt about his speed, of which he gave evidence on the tracks more than once last season, but he failed in both his public efforts as a two-year-old, so that he has still to demonstrate his right to be considered a good racehorse. Wrestler claims au engagement in the Maiden Hack Race at the Wangauui meeting.

Though Emperador has only recently resumed his place iamong R. J. Masons active division, ho showed on Saturday that he has not forgotten how to gallop. His task was a sprint over five furlongs, in company with Thames, whom ho had no difficulty in defeating. It was a smart performance, and Thames, though beaten, gave an attractive display of galloping. Being by Danube from the speedy. Armlet she is bred to gc fast, and she may pay her way over short courses this season.

Nones and Splendent were stretched ou." over six furlongs and finished together, r.heir performance being the fastest of tho morning over tho distance. Nones has at times caused her trainer trouble, but she is moving along nicely at present and is galloping as freely as ever she did. Her companion, who is a three-year-old by Hymettus— Sunglow, started twice last autumn, his best effort being his second to Koesian in the Russley Plate at Riccarton. Ho is a colt of distinct promise, who should not be long before-he shows up prominently in a race. Tito three-year-old filly, Disdainful, was allowed to run along on Saturday over a milk. Though not out on a re-cord-breaking mission, she was responsible for an attractive gallop. The second half of the journey was not covered quite so fast as the first four furlongs, but the filly had never previously been over a mile, and she got through her task without great effort. Disdainful has been a brilliant galloper sinco she was first broken in. and she looks like doing well this seaon. She is still susceptible to improvement, as she Avill not bo wanted to raoe till next month, the Dunedin Guineas being tho event selected for her first three-year-old appearance. She also looks a good prospect for tho Oaks at Riccarton, though no attempt has been made, so far, to find out whether she is likely to stay a mile and a half.

Snub, Chrysotis and Wardancer wore associated over a. mile and a quarter on Saturday. They maintained a sound and even pace all the way, and finished together. Chief interest in the. gallop centred in Wardancer. who had never been galloped before, except over shorter courses. Warstep's three-year-old brother held his place well at the finish, and the performance augured well for his prospects of winning races over a journey.

Fiery Cross was responsible for a gallop on Saturday over nine furlongs, being assisted by The Cornet over the last six. Fiery Cross moved freely throughout, and beat his companion comfortably at the finish, his effort being very attractive. Kingsway (F. Holmes, jun.) and Banian (D. M'Kay) were schooled over four hurdles on Saturday, getting through their work in good style. Calier Davon (L. Ha<»erty) and Darby Paul (D. M'Kay) subsequently gave a safe display over the same ground, though Calicr Davon showed no special anxiety to commence his jumping task. The light-weight jockey. J. Olsen. who has resided for several years in the south, doing most of his riding in Otago and Southland, lias decided to take up his quarters at Riccarton. He will ride as a free lance but he has received a number of applications for his services this season, and Riccarton will bo a more central location from which to work. He was on the track at Riccarton on Saturday and he should bo a welcome addition to the horsemen during working hours.

The four-year-old mare Golden Wob, by Golden' Knight—Miss Hamilton, broke ono of her forelegs, near the fetlock joint, while doing a gallop on the tan track at Riccarton on Saturday, and had to be destroyed. Golden Wob, who was trained by E. Scoullar, had. not done any racing.

Tho meeting held by Sydney TattorB all J 6 Club oil Saturday, niarlu tho

opening of the spring racing campaign in Australia. Most of tlio leading performers in Sydney claimed engagements and their displays would serve to throw considerable light on important events at the spring fixture of the Australian Jockey Club. The principal race on Saturday's programme was the Chelmsford Stakes, decided over nine furlongs, at weight-for-age, with penalties and allowances. There were eighteen starters, who probably included tho best of tho old hor&es in training, as well as all tho most promising three-year-olds. Under tho circumstances, tho victory of the New Zealand bred three-year-old, Sasanof, was of considerable merit. It wa& no mean performance to defeat Woorak, who stands right out by himself among Australian horses up to a mile. Thana, who filled third place, was one of the best of tho Australian two-year-olds, last season. She won the Sires' Produce Stakes and carrying a 101 b penalty ran into third place in the Champagne Stakes at the autumn meeting of tho Australian Jockey Club, while she opened the present .season by winning a sprint handicap on one of the suburban courses. Even without information a« to the other starters, it is thus evident that Sasanof registered a smart performance. Last season he was one of the best two-year-olds in tho Dominion, winning twice and being placed in five other events out of eight starts. His success on Saturday will compensate Mr W. G. Stead to some extent for the bad luck ho experienced when Eligible, tlio champion of his team, went wrong soon after his arrival in Sydney. Cheloma, another .of Mr Stead's lot, raced prominently in a minor event on Saturday, and it is probable that his Australian campaign will prove highly successful. Among tho defeated horses in Sasanof s race were Kilbov and Bee, but it may be unwise to drop thorn out of future calculations until some more information is available.
