MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. Mr T. A. B. Bailor, S.M., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday*. Herbert Down, Anthony Anthony, John M’Caldon, Harold Wilkinson, Harry Miller and Frederick Hamilton, were each fined’ 7s for footpath cycling. Charles Storer was fined 5s without costs for cycling without a ngnt. Frederick Thomas was convicted and discharged for leaving a cart unattended. Stanley George Ashton, a boy, was ordered to pay costs 9s and a witness’s expenses for motor-cycling over the Bank of New Zealand crossing at other chan a walking pace. LYTTELTON. Mr F. Anderson, J.P., and Mr J. Garrard, J.P., presided at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Alfred Palm, on a charge of using obscene language, was fined £5 and costs. ASHBURTON. Mr V. G. Day, S.M., presided at the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court yesterday- « . , For driving a motor-car at a speed exceeding the by-laws," along East Street, \v. K. M’Alpine was convicted and ordered to pay costs amounting to 50s. , , Alvin Kendill Lees was charged with allowing a, person under the age of seventeeeh years of age in his bil-liard-room. Senior-Sergeant Ryan prosecuted, and Mr Buchanan appeared for defendant. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said it was open to doubt whether the AshburtonBorough Council had power to frame a by-law limiting the ago of persons entering a billiard-room. He was not finding “fault with the prevision. He believed that in the present case defendant had taken reasonable precautions to ascertain the age of the youth. The case was dismissed. ' Florence Soal (Mr Buchanan), claimed £9 2s 3d from the executors of the estate of Ellen Small (Mr Acland) for work -as cook. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £6 Is 6d and cdsts £1 16s. . , , . , Judgment was given for plaintiff by default with costs in the following civil cases:—F. Frost v. C. Miller, claim £l6 13s Bd, and Chertsey Stock and Saleyards Company v. Patrick Murphy, claim £26 7s 2d.
