THE BRITISH LINES. LONDON, June 27. —On Saturday night the British carried out a number of raids, entering the enemy’s lines at ten points, and causing considerable casualties. Tbo Munster Fusiliers and the Anzacs were particularly successful. The bombardment was continued on Sunday and was effective. AN ITALIAN VICTORY. ROME, June 27. —After an intense artillery preparation the Italians attacked from the Vallarsa to the Brenta and drove the Austrians back. Many positions were captured iu one day and the enemy lost heavily. BATTLES FOR VERDUN. PARIS, June 27.—A German attack west of Tliiaumont completely failed, but the French gained some trench elements between Fumin and Chenois woods. The German bombardment is said to have eased. RUSSIA’S THRUST. PETROGRAD, June 27.—The Russians are reported to have entered Translyvania. The Germans claim successes m fighting in the Styr region. EAST AFRICAN CAMPAIGN. LONDON, June 27—General Smuts defeated the enemy heavily at the Lukigurn. River south of Handeni. „ AUSTRALIA BUYS STEAMERS. LONDON, June 27. —The Australian Government has purchased fifteen cargo steamers to transport the wheat harvest.
