' BRAVERY OF THE NAVY. CITY COUNCIL'S ADMIRATION. The City Council last night, oh the Maw's motion, resolved :—" That the Christchurch City Council expresses the warmest admiration at the bravery and heroism of the officers and men of his Majesty's Navy in the recent North Sea battle,'in which the glorious traditions of the British Navy were so magnificently upheld. Nc« Zealand was able to participate in the engagement and assisted in tlm ing many of the enemy's ships to-tnt bottom of the sea and others in a precipitous retreat, till there was not an encmv ship to engage our Navy Y> true we rejoice that the Navy gained suck a splendid victory wo deplore the ieartai loss of life, and tender our deep sympathy with those who have lost loved ones"who fell for the Empire m the cause of liberty, justice and JiunuunDj , and further, this council desires to payits tribute to tlie memory of that great soldier and statesman, Lord Kitchener, whose untimely death plunged the British nation in sorrow and regret. His death has caused a vacancy which it will be almost impossible to fill, but it, has strengthened our determination to earn- on to a successful and victorious conclusion the great work to which he devoted his life."

Prior to comeneing the business at the Lvttelton Borough Council last night the Mayor (Mr W. Radcliffe) referred to the death of Commander H. L L. Pennoll. who was kOled onboard tho Oucen Marv in the Jutland'battle. He said that one and all would remember Commander PenncU's fine work whilst on hoard Captain Scott s Antarctic ship Terra Nova A motion of condolence was carried., councillors standing, and it was decided to forward a, letter of sympathy to Coinmanaer Pennell's widow.
