TRAMWAY BOARD.

TESTER-DAT 9 MEETING. The Christchurch Tramway Board met yesterday; present—Mr J. A. Flesher (in the chair), the Hon J. Barr, and Messrs G. T. Booth, H. Pearce, A. S. Taylor, O. M. Gray. D. Sykes, S. A. Staples and T. H. Davey. Tho Works and Traffic Committee reported that the board owned thirteen four-wheeled cars, which, owing to their small seating capacity, were not used regularly. A trial had been made of coupling two of theso together, thus doubling tho seating facilities, yet still driven by one motorman. llic existing equipment was used and the trial was sufficiently successful to justify tho importation of electrical ment specially suited to the new conditions. When that arrived the new coupled car would be put into service on all lines. If successful, all the fourwheeled stock could be similarly treated. The cars, being lighter, ought to prove more suitable for the Hackthorno Road service than the. ones now in use. The revenue account of main area lines for last year showed a ■'surplus of £3I6S. In addition there had been brought forward from the previous year £5836. The committee proposed transferring these, to a surplus suspense account, pending a special valuation of stores and old trailers. The Riccarton-Sockburn surplus, including £6OO brought forward from last year, amounted to £1733. The committee proposed to again carry forward £GOO and to write tho balance off tho Riccarton preliminary expense account. The Pacarua County Council having applied for street lamps from Coach Corner to the Abattoir, tho comniotteo had agreed to supply them on the same terms as to tho Waimairi and New Brighton Councils. Application had been made to the Railway Department for leave to extend tho present track in the power station yard, to facilitate the handling of trailers. The estimated cost was £4O. The report was adopted. The Technical College Board wrote, asking the board to receive a deputation with regard to the training of apprentices. It was decided to receive the deputation at tho next meeting of the Works and Traffic Committee.

In reply to a reqnest for. a grant towards the cost of a ranger's cottage at Deans's Bush, it was resolved to reply that the board had no authority to grant money for tho purpose., Accounts amounting to £7234 14s 5d were passed for payment.
