HEALTH OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

ASHBURTON BRANCH OF SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Ashburton branch of the Society for the Health of "Women and Children was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs J. B. Christian presiding. The report stated that the society could be .warmly congratulated on the good work accomplished during the past year. The society had Ueen fortunate in securing the services of Nurse Hancock, through whose hands '2OO babies hud passed and who had paid 1000 visits to homes in the district, while there had been a total of 933 calls at the society's rooms in the arcade. During the year the society had received an appeal from the Homeland for warm parmeiyts for the children of British sol-' dicrs and sailors, and 1500 garments were sent. Special mention was made of the valuable assistance given by Mrs West, who, in addition to making up a large number of garments, had given a monetary donation of £SO. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of £167 Is 7d. hut Mrs Christian stated the least amount the society could do with for n year's working was £2OO. Owing to the war and the great demand which had been made on the public for patriotic purposes in connection with the war," it had not been thought advisable to innkc any street collection this year. but i't was* hoped that the necessary £2OO for the work of the coming yeai would he easily forthcoming. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Officers were elected as follows : —Presidem. Mrs J. B. Christian; vice-presi-dents, Mcsdames Mullin, Taylor, Standish, Gnlbrnith and Nosworthy: committee. WattMrs Christian stated thai- it was hoped that a case of warm garments for the children of the sailors who lost their lives in the recent naval fight would be readv by June '27 to be forwarded to Lady Jellicoc.
