ENEMY SURPRISES REPULSED. PILES OF CORPSES LEFT. j The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, June 16. Yesterday, between the Adige and the Pironta, the enemy made fruitless costly efforts to break down the Italian resistance. In the Lagarina valley on the night of Juno 15 the enemy attempted a surprise at Scrraville and on tho Coni Znsna. After three hours’ sevevo lighting the enemy lied. On the Posina-Astico front, after enemy night attacks at Campiglia, there was a reciprocal bombardment on tho Asiago plateau. The enemy, estimated at a strength of eighteen battalions, attacked between Mounts Pari and Lemcrle, but curtain lire broke down the attack, tho enemy leaving piles of corpses.

The High Commissioner reports:— LONDON, June 17. Between the Adige and the Astico intense artillery duels took place. On the Selte Comuni Plateau there were iiereo engagements, which were to the Italians. Southwest of Asiago, after a heavy bombardment,' from Mount Pari to Bosco, tho enemy attacked in the direction of Mount Magnasoschi and between Mount Lemerlc and Bosco. After costly efforts the enemy reached tho summit of Mount Lemcrlo but were dislodged by counter-attack. North-east of Asiago we advanced between the Frenzela valley and Marcesina. On the right wing, the Alpine troops took positions at Malga Fossetta and Mount Magari, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and taking 203 prisoners, six guns, four macliine-guns and much material. AUSTRIANS’ DESPERATE ATTACKS By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright ROME, June 16. The seriousness of the situation in Galicia has spurred' Austria to desperate efforts on the Italian front. As it is impossible to transfer troops to Galicia in time to stay the debacle, the Austrian General Staff is striving for a decision against tho attack of the Italians. An Italian communique states:— Large Austrian forces made a surprise attack on the night of Wednesday m the Lagarina Valley. After three hours’ desperate lighting, wo put tho enemy to flight, and at dawn the retreating force was heavily shelled. Masses of the enemy estimated at eighteen battalions, after a violent bombardment, made several attacks ou Monte Pari and Monte Lemerle, but the impetuous assault broke down, the enemy leaving heaps of corpses behind them. We counter-attacked' successfully! The communique adds: —Between the Adige and Brenta, despite the enemy’s costly attempts to break down our resistance we are now strongly established on the whole front. ON THE ISONZO. BULGARS FACE ITALIANS. _ ROME, June 16. A Bulgarian division lias arrived on the lsonzo front to replace two Austrian divisions sent to Galicia.
