MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Queen Election Committee met in the Art Gallery yesterday afternoon ; present —Messrs M ■ H. dark (chairman). Cyrus . Williams, W. H. E. Wnnklvn. F, M. Warren, F. W. Hobbs, S. Orchard, W. Malcolm, W. J. Stewart, W. It. Montgomery, S. A. Staples, J. S. Barrett, D. Rutherford, H. A. Knight and' H. S. Bourn. , The clerk of the Cheviot- County Council wrote stating that the council would adhere to its decision not- to contest- '’the preliminary Queen of the Hills' election. It intended to vote £2500 to the Patriotic Fund, and expected to be able to pay £IOOO of this after April 1 and' the balance at the rate of £SOO a year. If it could legally do so, it would like to earmark the £2500 for the Queen of the Hills in the final contest. It was decided to ask the council to spread its contributions over two years. A letter was read from the secretary of the Oxford committee inquiring as to its.position. :■ .. ■ It was decided that a deputation should' wait on the committee, and tile secretary was instructed to communicate with the Mayor of Rangiora asking him to help in bringing the Oxford district into the contest.

The president and secretary of the Y.M.C.A. wrote offering the use of the association’s rooms for committees or sections working in the contest. The offer was received with thanks.

The chairman stated that-the total votes 'represented the stim of £20,520, and the'treasurer (Mr "Warren) stated that the actual cash paid into the bank amounted to £19,475, of which £17,999 had been paid' to the Patriotic Fund.

The chairman said that lie thought that a flag-pole should be erected on the grounds of the Bank of New Zealand in Cathedral Square. Air Barrett suggested that a line of flags should be taken from the Bank of New Zealand to the fourth, storey of the United Service Hotel, across Colombo Street. The flags at present were not in the proper place on the Royal .Exchange Buildings. Mr Staples said’ that it would be merely spending, money needlessly to alter the position of the flags. -The public sought information as to the relative positions of the candidates from the newspapers. The matter was left m the hands ot the sub -committee, appointed to attend, to the display of flags. Mr Staples said that there, was some clashing of functions held in the interests of the contest. It would be better for those who arranged the functions to communicate with the secretary and to have dates allotted to them, in order that functions sliould not bo held close together. The secretary was instructed to.write to the chairmen of committees drawing attention to Mr Staples’s statements.
