fFrom Our Correspondents.! AMBER LEY. The quarterly meeting, of the Hope of Ariiberley Lodge. C.A.0.D., was held on Saturday eveniugy A.IX Brotner D. O’Brien presiding over a good attendance of members. ■ One guinea was voted towards an appeal from Timaru Lodge. It was reported that following members had joined the Rcinforcements:—Brothers J. Al. Forbes, M . Boyce, J. A. Retalliek, L. G. Winter, D. H. Harniss. 14. Rowuey, M ■ Powell,. J. Ford and -1. .J- Mockctt. Each member had been presented' with two pairs of socks by the lodge, 'lb© receipts tor the evening amounted u, £66 Is lOd, and the expenditure to £34 3s Bd.

KIMBERLEY. A meeting of the Kimberley let© Committee was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening, when there was a good attendance. Mr 4. M. hryer presiding. The canvassers reported having received the following additional promises :—M-r M illiain Malison, £5; Mesdames A. Jarman, D. Gulanders, J. 0. Redfern, J- and P. Clinton and Ml A. Lattimore. produce, etc. The following were added to the Sports Committee:—Messrs D. M Beth, J. Gill, M'. Bedford. J. Tootell aim J. Gartrev. Miss Knight, of Racecourse Hill, offered to provide the prizes for all the. sports events, and the on*' l ' Was accepted with thanks. Air A. Tut ton donated a prize for the dancing competition. , Threshing operations ar© now in tuli swing in the district. Notwithstanding the dry season, Mrs Cogaii. of Waddineton and Kimberley, has secured 6250 bushels of wheat- from 200 acres, an average of slightly over 01 bushels an aero, and 1440 bushels of oats, from thirty acres, an average ot 48 bushels an acre. Mr A. Tutton s returns were 40 bushels an acie foi oats and 24 bushels ail acre, for wheat. Harvest festival ; services were held .in the Kimberley Methodist Church on Suudav bv Mr Dennis in the- moining and Mr M". T. Hooper in the evening. Vocal duets were, contributed by the Misses Jane and Ada Rcveley in the morning and the Misses Madge and Gladys McClelland in the evening. Miss Irene Clements was the organist, there were large attendances at both services.

CUL VER DEN. Thh Amuri Collie Club’s annual meeting was held in Culverden on baturdav, Mr P. H. Hamilton presiding over a Targe attendance. It was decided to hold the trials as usual on Mr Grucber’s property, at a date to be fixed later. A motion of sympathy was passed in connection with the death ot Mr 4V. O. Rutherford, who was intimately connected 'with collie, dag -trials throughout New Zealand. Mr Elliott, ot Glenavy, was appointed judge for the coming trials.

OHOKA. A public meeting was held in the Ohoka Hall on Monday night to consider the advisability of holding a patriotic carnival. Mr R. Evans presided. It was decided not to hold a carnival, but to approach the Ohoka and Eyreton Jockey Club with a view oc holding a patriotic race. ■ meeting, the proceeds to be divided between the Patriotic and Red Cross Funds.

KAIKOURA

An order for fifty tons of ground limestone has been received by Mr TA. Johnston from the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative- Association. Should the shipment, (now going forward) prove satisfactory,- it will be increased to five hundred tons. Tests having proved the Kaikoura limestone to be of high agricultural value,' even in its native Estate, that put >m we market in ground form is, expected to find considerable 'favour. Local tests inado sustain that view. Good mortar is also obtained from selected stone.

The Sports and Commerce Queen (Mrs A. J. Marshall), is still at the head of the poll, last week’s voting placing the Hills Queen (Mrs G. E. Parsons) second, with Miss Violet Boyd (Plains Queen) third. Arrangements are nearly completed for the shipment of fat cattle by steamer. Hesitation on the part of the local Harbour Board to provide the liecessary facilities earlier led to a good many head of great cattle being sent north overland.

ASHBURTON. At a. meeting of the directors of the Canterbury Petroleum Prospecting Company,, Ltd., held on Tuesday afternoon, applications were received for 117 new ‘ shares,. which were allotted, making the total number of shares subscribed 11,207. Arrangements were completed' for the purchase of 1200 ft of lOin casing, and the manager was authorised to secure an option over a further.6ooft of the same size, and also over 3000 ft of 9in casing. Satisfactory progress is being made with the well at Chertsey, which is now down 750 ft, with . 12iit casing. The stratum being passed through contains a good quantity of elav, and' there appears good reason to hope that the end of the shingle will soon be. reached, when the progress should bo more rapid. A meeting of the Live Stock Committee in connection with the Ashburton patriotic show was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr TV. C. Smith presided. Messrs R. Frisbv. TY. T. Lill and TV. J. Stoddart (TVillowby) were appointed district representatives. Tt was decided that the committee should meet the Ground' Committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association on the grounds on Tuesday, March 7, to arrange for pens in connection with the sale of stock. Reports to hand stated that gifts of stock were very encouraging, and comprised sheep, cattle, horses and pigs.

TEMUKA. The Temuka Pipe Works have been sold to, a company formed in , Christchurch. which is entering into possession 'immediately. The works are within the borough, and stand on two acres of ground. With the plant and land the new company fias also purchased about 120 acres of land at Kakahu, where' there are said to be supplies of the finest pipeclay suitable for the manufacture of glazed pipes and pottery of all descriptions. It is stated that the new company, among other things, will manufacture roofing tiles.
