TRAMWAY BOARD.

YESTERDAY'S MEETING. Tho Christchurch Tramway Board met yesterday; present—Mr J. A. Flesher (chairman), the Hon J- Barr, M.L.C., and Messrs T. H. Davey, S. A. Staples. D. Sykes, CM. Gray, A. S. Taylor, H. Poarce and G. T. Booth. ADVERTISING CONTRACT. The Works and Traffic Committee reported ibar. as requested by tho board it bad reconsidered its previous recoinmeiidation that the proposal to advertise on tbe backs of reversible seats tor a. period of five years at £312 per annum should be accepted. The committee recommended that the contractshould be completed. Mr A. S. Taylor moved as an amendment that the advertising contract with Messrs Chandler should not be accepted, on the score that the reversible backs of scuts constituted a most inconvenient, unsightly and uncomfortable place for the aJSxing of advertisements. Tho period, five years, also. ■was too long. The. Hon J. Birr seconded the amendment. If. tho principle that advertisements could be placed anywhere were to be admitted they might as well use the cars purely as an advertising medium, and let. the public ride free. On a division the amendment was lost. The report was adopted. EDCEWARE ROAD SERVICE.

The Works and Traffic Committee reported that as directed by the board it had carefully considered the petition of a large number of St Albans residents asking that all the Edgeware Road cars should proceed to tho Warrington Street terminus. Those cars which at present stopped at Edgewnre Road had just sufficient time to run to Warrington Street without altering the time-table of the route or increasing the wages expenses. The time-table was arranged with this in view when the line was opened. There wore, however, a few trips which could not be so extended. The 7.43 a.m.,.from the Square on Monday. , Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursdav and Saturday, and the 10.1 p m from the Square on Fridays could not be. altered until March 1. but when the March time-table was prepared it ruild be arranged for these to run to Warrington Street. The 1.56 p.m. from Square on Monday. Tuesday. Wednes-I day. Thursday and Saturday, and the lOiafl a.m. from' Square on Sundays must continue to terminate the journey at Edgewnre Road as at present. With these exceptions all cars would run through to the terminus. Mr Svke-s drew attention to the fact Un*' the concession would cost the board £937 per annum, for which no extra fares would be received. At the Hackthorno Road end the residents naid a special rat* of C 955 per annum, for their extension. The letter was received, and it wr.s decided to apply to the A.M.P. Society for permission to place a seat outside their budding in Cathedral Square. *"." Mr .1 H. Mcnzies wrote asking tm board to provide a seat for passengers on the Hackthorne Road line at tho lirst stopping place. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Gray, to grant the request. On the motion of Mr T. H. Davey. it was decided to placo a seat on the corner of Exeter and Carlton Streets. The. Public Service Group m connection with the Queen Election wrote applying for a nerwnbnge of tramway profits in respect of their garden fete at Fendalton on March 4. It was derided to consider the matter at a later date. • 'v-'-"'- '■ The Christchurch branch of the Red Cross Society wrote asking for permission to place collecting boxes in the {'atlK'dral Square shelter for the " Shilling Blanket Fur.d." Tim General Malinger of New Zealand Railways wrote in reference to

signalmen employed at street crossings. in replv to' a communication from the board, statins that his previous decision on the matter could not be altered. An extra signalman could not. b? placed at .Antigua Street crossing, and no reduction could he made in the present charges. Accounts amounting to £'0707 8s fid were passed for payment;.
