TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL

Tile Canterbury Trades and Labour Council met oil Saturday, Mr. H. tt orrai! presiding. Mr S. King tendered bis resignation as a member of the council, of the Hall Committee and as a representative on rho .National Kxoeucivo of the Inittd federation ol Labour owing to Ins occupation our of town precluding bis attendance. The resignation was accepted will, regret. The election to iiil the vacancies was bold over until next mecc'.ng.

The first assistant secretary of the General Post Office wrote i;i reply to council's protest thai the censoring of the National I'eace Council's correspondence was one of the regrettable necessities imposed by the present state of war. The letter was received. The Wellington Trades and Labour Council and the United Federation of Labour forwarded protests against the Order-in-Council recently issued by the Governor with respect to the employment of discharged soldiers. The letter was received and it. v»r- decided to call a meeting of discharged soldiers to discuss the situation. It was further resolved- '" That this council enters its emphatic protest, against the llorernment interfering with the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Ac! w.tli respect to the issue of uiislcr.-ratc permits to discharged soldiers. Wo are oi opinion that the order is an insidious attempt by the Government to escape its own responsibility and etnnpel men who have served their country .to become low pai.d workmen.'' fr wa.-; dt> r'"T'l to send a copv of lbs resolution to the Minister of Labour. The following resolution was carried: "That this council urge the SI mister of Justice to appoint women Justices of the-Peace to deal with eases involving questions affecting women and children." ______
