EDWIN SMITH. Yn old and highly respected resident of Sprin-neld, }lr Edwin Smith, diea on Thursday at the residence of Ins daughter. Mrs Milne, Clare Road, bt fUbans. Mr Smith was born in Somersetshire. England, in the year 1801, and arrived in New Zealand by the ship Opawa some thirty-six. years ago. Ho landed in Nelson, but afterwards came to Springfield, where he made his home. For many years he was encaged in mining operations, but later took up land in the district and worked it in conjunction with his sons, but owing to failing health he. found it necessary to retiro a few years ago. Ho leaves a widow and a grown-up family of four sons and six daughters.
