SPORTING.
NEWS AND NOTES. Last week was particularly quiet at Riccarton. the. tracks wearing a deserted appearance. This was due to the fact that upwards of forty horses, representing nearly all the local stables, were absent at Wingatui, assisting at the autumn meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club. A fair share of the prize money was secured, eleven winners hailing from this quarter, in addition to which place money was secured in a. number of other events. Cutts Brothers were successful with Good Hope and Don Pacifico, M. Hobbs with Reval and Ciiicinnatus, G. Murray Aynsley with Spangle and Wardancer. and F. D. Jones scored thrice with Bore, while W. M'Donald won with Silent Way, R. Derrett with Sir Malt, andß.Longloy with Twelfth Night.
Reval has been trained at Riccarton for some time past, having been an inmate of M. Hobbs's stable, and while there lie has been responsible for some excellent performances. The death of Mr E. H. Reid, and the purchase of his interest by Mr C. Studholme, formerly Mr Reid's partner, may bring a change. According to report, the. Finland gelding is likely to go back to Timani to be trained by S. Trilford, who was in charge during Roval's early racing days, with very satisfactory results. .Mr Studholme purchased the yearling filly by Sarto—Chinook in Dunedin last week, and it is understood she has already been placed under Trilford's care. ,
Bee showed signs of soreness while at Wingatui last week, and she can be dismissed from Wanganui Cup calculations. There was little inducement to make the northern trip, in any case, as the handicapper looked well after the Martian mare.
The yearling colt by Sarto—Noblesse, purchased in Dunedin last week by Sir C. Machell for eighty guineas, will go into W. M'Donald's stable, which already shelters Meltehikoff, Moddite and Teviotdale, who race in the same interest.
Having got through with the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, local trainers will now have to turn their attention to other autumn fixtures.- The first o;f these is the Akaroa County meeting, to be held at Motukarara on Saturday week, and which promises to be unusually successful, judged from the support accorded it by owners. The Waimate and South Canterbury meetings will be held later in March, and they are both likely to attract a good deal of support from this quarter.
j The programme for the Ashburton County Racing Club's autumn meeting has been passed, the amount to be ! given in stakes being about the same j as that distributed last year. The Canterbury horseman, G. J. j Pine,'got into trouble with the stewards I of the Dunedin Jockey Club on Saturj day. The incident occurred in conneci tio'n with the Waihola Handicap, the | second last event of the meeting, in | which Pine had the mount on Ardmore, I the winner. Kentlock, Hornbeam and j Deltonio began smartly but after going ! about two furlongs they were supplant'ed by Ardmore and Redshire. ThenI there was a mix-up. Hornbeam apI peared to get a bump, with the re- [ suit that she interfered with Kentlock, I who stumbled and fractured a pastern joint. The stewards opened an inquiry on the course, but adjourned till the evening. After consideration, they decided that Pine was responsible for the accident and ho was suspended for three months for interference. I There could be no doubt that some inI terference did occur, but it is urged I in Pine's favoui that his mount suffers I from a serious disability, the sight, of I one of his eyes having been affected by an accident at the Ku'row meeting last October. Horses minus sight in one eye are always difficult to manage, and some of the leading clubs in Australia have recognised the position by » drastic rule, under which they refuse the entries of horses so affected. Kentlock. who had to be destroyed at Wingatui on Saturday, as the result of a. fractured pastern joint, sustained while contesting the Waihola Handicap, at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, was an Australian-bred horse by Malster—Satire, by Lochiel. He was_a verv promising colt and realised 670 guineas as a yearling, but he failed to win in his first two seasons, though he ran well more than once. Last he was purchased by Mr R. B. Berry, and did a season at the stud in North Otago. He was then put into training and raced each day of the meeting at "Wingatui last week. He showed a good turn of speed and looked ! like paying his way later in the season, i so that his death is a bad knock for ' his connections, quite apart from the | fact that such a well-bred and good- ! looking horse would probably have been i worth a lot as a sire.
A circular letter from Sir George Clifford, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, was considered bv. the committee of the Ashburton County Racing; Club on Saturday. The' letter had reference to a circular letter sent out to the various racing clubs on January (3. in respect to the donations which had been made to the Patriotic Funds since the present war first broke o'lt, and went oa to sav that the replies, with very few exceptions, had been favourable to the suggestion that trustees should be appointed to receive such donations as clubs intended or were committed to subscribe to Patriotic Funds, and that every club which had directly or Lndireetly given voluntarily a sum of £ooo should be privileged to nominate a trustee or trustees. The committee expressed approval of the proposals contained in the letter, and a. motion was carried to the effect that a joint trustee be appointed to represent the Ashburton and neighbouring clubs, and the matter of further dealing with the question was left with Mr H. F. Nicoll. president of the Ashburton Trotting Club.
At a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton County Racing Club, held on Saturday, the chairman, Mr T. E. Upton, made reference to the fact that the president, of the club, Jlr J. Grigg, would be leaving 'next Saturday'on a visit to Groat Britain. Mr Upton spoke of the many valuable services Mr Grigs bad rendered the club as president, as a steward, a supporter of the racing by entering and running horses and in monetary contributions. He then conveyed to Sir Grigg the committee's best wishes in respect to the trip he was about to take to the Old Country, and asked him to accept a souvenir, in the form of a tastefully bound racehook cover, with the monogram of the Ashburton Countv Racing Club in gold, and also Mr Griggs own monogram in gold. Mr Grigg. he said, was >i true sportsman in everv respect, and a very worthy sou'-'of "a most, worthy father. Mr Grigg. hi reply, said that he highly valued the compliment which had been paid him. and he would treasure very highly the present which had been made him. The more he thought of it the more it grew upon him" that the committee hacl been specially careful to give him some appropriate souvenir to'express their feelings, as true sportsmen, towards him. He speciallv and most cordially thanked them for the kindly reference which had been made to his father, the kite Mr lob;' GrigJi.
