OTIRA TUNNEL.
RUMOURED CLOSING. REPORT CONTRADICTED BY DEPARTMENT. A report was current at Otira yesterday that the tunnel works were to be closed owing to lack of explosives. Nothing definite was. forthcoming as to when it was proposed to close down, or as to the length of time. A regular supply of gelignite is necessary for the boring work, but it is understood that a supply of five hundred-cases of the explosive is on hand.
[From: Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, February 21. The reported stoppage of. the worksat Ofcira Tunnel through lack of explosives is inaccurate. The chief engineer of the Public Works Department states that work is going on to the fullest extent, and that there is no slacking through any cause.
