DRAPERS ASSISTANTS' UNION
The Christchureh Retail Drapers Assistants' Union held its monthly meeting on Thursday evening in the W.G.T.U. rooms. Manchester Street. Mr J. M'Combs. M.P., presided, and there was a good attendance of members.
An application from the Wellington Trades and Labour Council for assistance to test a rase of considerable interest to unionism was granted.
A letter was received from the Otago Trades and Labour Council asking for financial assistance on behalf of a member of the Dunedin Jewellers* Union who while assisting in a patriotic function met with u serious accident; resulting in the loss of one arm. thus preventing him from following his usual occupation.-The union decided to grant assistance.
It was decided to make a special appeal to employees to join the union. It was decided to engage tl'je services of a permanent organiser to secure a sufficient number of members to enable the union to join with other similar unions to secure a Dominion award, with better conditions and higher wages. A Dominion award could also make ■ provision for heads of departments and window dressers. The suggested demands were: —Departmental managers or manageresses £-5 10s, window dressers £4 10s. senior males £4. senior females £3.
