COUNTY COUNCILS.

CHEVIOT. The Cheviot County Council mot on Saturday; present —Messrs-’I. li. Gee. X. MeiKtc. 1!. U. Jameson, T. Stevenson and C. Barnes, Air Stevenson v.-r.s voted lo the chaw.

Messrs Al'Gratli and Wilke wrote requesting "the council 1 to metal the road leading to their properties. It was resolved to shingle the worst cutting before whiter. Mr Duncan Rutherford, telegraphed that owing to the heavy rains he was una'o'e to wait on the council in regard to the -Licen of the Hills Carnival, .and urging the council to join in the contest. It was resolved that as the district had been so thoroughly canvassed recently in the local Rod Cross Queen contest, not to compete in the Queen of the Hills, but that the council should vote £2504 to the Canterbury, Patriotic Fund and have the sum credited to the Queen oi tho Hills, if possible, in the. final Canterbury contest. It was also decided to invite residents to make donations to the fund through the. council. The Belgium Relief Fund wrote stating that it intended continuing active operations for another month and asking whether the council intended to pa\ its quota in the future. ll was resolved to resume payments on a population basis until some satisfactory arrangement, could be arrived at between tho various bodies interested. The sum of £2S was voled, being arrears for the past four months, and it was decided to transmit the money through the Government. The published statements ol the Funds Executive that Cheviot had eons tributed nothing, were-commented upon, members stating that the council had contributed at the rate of £7 per' month from April 1 to October 31. Particulars of. the new recruiting scheme were received from the National Recruiting Committee, and it was resolved to call a public meeting to ‘set up a local Recruiting Committee as reqpested, also to accept the offer of the Christchurch Recruiting Committee to send speakers. The superintendent of the National Provident Fund forwarded particulars in regard to superannuation for council employees. Xo action was taken in the matter. The clerk reported that all rates excepting £&*> ,10s. Id had been cot looted. Jt was resolved to take proceeding* against the defaulting ratepayers and also against, two ratepayers who refused to pay the 10 per cent penalty. The Audit Department forwarded the county balance-sheet certified to for the half-year. Accounts totalling £245 10s 7d were passed for payment.

The council then sat as tho Conway Domain Board, and the yearly balance-sheet showing n credit of £4O is 3d, was adopted.

OXFOfD. The Oxford County Council met- on Tuesday; present—Messrs J. Wells (chairman), A. Baxter, H. Campbell, J. Cross, I). Hawke and E. Mover. \ Mr J. Cook tendered his resignation owing to pressure of business, and it was accepted with regret. Regarding the old log bridge on Wilson’s Road, it was resolved that it should be replaced by concrete, tenders to be called for the labour. It was decided that the Island race should be carried on into the riverbed reserve adjoining R.S. 13941, and that dog registration fees should be 2s 6d for sheep and cattle dogs and 10s for all others, dogs to be registered before April 30. ’i tie surveyor reported that he had arranged for getting shingle for Mounsey's Creek Road. Mr G. W. Forbes. M.P.. wrote regarding the local Recruiting Committee, stating that if he. could assist, tin/ council he would bo pleased to do so. The. offer was accepted with thanks. The North' Canterbury Hospital Board's invitation to the Council to be present at. tbe laving of tbe foundation stone of the Chalmers Memorial Ward by Miss Chalmers, the donor, on Wednesday. February 23, was accepted, provided harvest operations permitted. The Poor of Great Britain, Ireland and Belgium Fund wrote regarding local bodies paying their quota. It was considered that, having sent £750, Oxford had done its share. The Rnngiova Patriotic Committee wrote regarding n. nomination for the Queen of the North. It was resolved to reply that Oxford had raised its quota on the understanding that there should be no Queen C-armysl. it was resolved that the attention of the railwnv engineer should be railed to the state of the Brxlev crossing. The following tenders wero accepted, subject to certain conditions:—Contract 61. H. Askey. •* W, cubic vnrd; contract 65. R. J. nossi er at d L. J. Youngman. at 3s uer cubic yard. Accounts amounting to £177 Os 5d were p for payment.
