MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. Mr T. A. B. Bniloy, S.AI , presided at the Alagistrate’s Court yesterday. On a charge of drunkenness Carl Hagbaston, a fourth offender, was sentenced to .seven days’ imprisonment, with hard labour.
William M’Cov pleaded guilty to drunkenness, breaking a taxi-cab window valued at 10s, and assaulting Constable Black. Accused was convicted on all charges, ordered to pay for the damage to the taxi-cab, and lined 40s in default fourteen days’ imprisonment on the .charge of assault. Charles William Oliver pleaded not guilty to a charge of inciting William M’C'oy to resist Constable Black. After hearing evidence accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. James Crowley, charged with being a rogue and a' vagabond, having been found by night without lawful excuse on enclosed premises at 8. Chaplin Street, pleaded guilty. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called .upon, and was warned that he had better get out of the town.
John Laming (Mr Hunt) pleaded not guilty to charges of using obscene language, wilfully breaking two window panes, valued at £l, the property of K. K. J. Mitchell, and with being a rogue and a vagabond, found by night without lawful excuse on premises at 34, Allen Street. After evidence had been heard accused was lined 20s and rests, in default seven days’ imprisonment, on the charge ot obscene language, and ordered to pay for the damage to the. window. The vagrancy charge, was dismissed. Thomas Crook was charged with stealing from the dwelling of Alary Gibb, at Marshlands; goods to the value of £5 on January 14, and with entering.the dwelling of Kathleen Barnett, at' Richmond, on February 10, with intent to commit a crime. On tlie application of Cluef-Detcctive Herbert accused was remanded for a week. Benjamin Searlc was fined 10s aud costs on a charge of cycling at night without a light. Thomas L. Cowlishnw. charged with leaving a ear in Victoria Street at night without a tail light, denied tho offence. He admitted driving tho car without a tail light, and the charge was amended accordingly, and defendant was convicted and discharged. George Hills, jun., charged with motoring at excessive speed on the North Hoad; was lined 10s and costs.
Herbert Arthur Hay,, charged with motor-cycling at excessive speed on Papanui lload, was fined 10s and costs.
Clarence Vivian Quigley, aged eighteen (Mr Aeland), was convicted and discharged for motoring at excessive speed on tlie North Road. Annie. M’Cormack, alias Mario Sanson. was charged with using obscene language on January 31 in Tuam Street. She said she had no knowledge of the occurrence. After hearing evidence that accused used the language while in a house in Tuam Street so as to be heard on the street, the Magistrate inflicted a-sentence of fourteen days’ imprisonment.
W. Carey Tlill was charged.with attaching a hose to the city high pressure water service without having a meter installed. Mr Loughnan appeared for the City Council. The defendant said that nothing was said about not using the water for gardening purposes when tho connection was put in, and he acted innocently. A fine of. 20s and costs was imposed. E. C. Huio (Air o reason) appeared on a similar charge. AJ.r Gresson stated that defendant had applied for a meter, but one could not he .supplied. He had also offered to pay any reasonable sum for water up to 2000 gallons a week. A fine of 20s and costs was imposed. George King, similarly charged, said he did not use fifteen gallons of water a. week. He had no garden worth speaking of. Defendant was ordered to pay costs. Charles Graham Lamb, similarly charged, did not appear, and was fined 10s and costs. Howard Robinson, charged with selling cigarettes and tobacco when tobacconist shops were shut, admitted the offence, and was fined £3 and costs. Henry G. Cockle, charged with failing to send a child to school, said he sent the child, but the child wouldn’t go. A fine of 10s and costs was imposed. Thomas Mathis was charged with wilfully damaging flowers to the value of £1 10s, the property of Edward Pritchard, at Leeds Street, Linwood, on February 10. After hearing evidence the Magistrate ordered defendant to pay 20s damages and costs 6s. Emma Knight and Silas Knight, for whom Air Rowe appeared, were charged with keeping a house frequented by persons having no lawful risible mean's of support,. After hearing a great deal of evidence, the Magistrate convicted defendants, and imposed a
fine of CIO, in default two months’ imprisonment. Henry 1 lucks (Mr Dacro). charged with failing to close his shop at North New Brighton during hours prescribed by the Shops and Offices Act. was convicted and fined a nominal penalty of is.
ASHBURTON. Mr V. 0. Day, S.M., presided at the. Ashburton .Magistrate's Court yesterday. Marion RouUton (Mr Burnell) was charged with storing liquor in a nolieense district for one James Beach. After hearing evidence the, Magistrate hold that there had been ft breach of the Act and inflicted a line ol IQs and costs.
For driving a motor-ear within the borough at an excessive speed K. Cannon was fitted 20s it ltd rest s. 'Priscilla. T. Thomson applied for a separation order and maintenance against her husband, Horatio F). A\ . Thomson. Mr Buchanan appeared for complainant and Mr Kennedy for defendant. The order was granted and complainant was given the custody of the three children. .Defendant was ordered to pay 27s a week maintenance and costs. Judgment, was given for plaintiff by default with costs in the ease of Mitchell and Turner v. A. G. Hcpburnc. claim £1 Us (id. Tn the judgment summons ease It. Stills v. P. J.
