.. NEWS AND NOTES. , ~ ■* ■ ____ * Nominations for the Now Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club'/ February meeting will close to-night at eight o'clock. Ringform and Kentloek arrived at Riccartou from NOTth Otago on Friday night and were on the track ..on Saturday morning. The Hawke's Bay horseman, L. Wilson, who has done most of his riding in the past in the North Island, will be*at Riccarton this week, to fulfill several He will probably go fHither south later on. to ride at the Dunedin. Jockey Club's meeting. The All Black filly,' Dribble, who won the- Trial Plato.-on -the first;day. of the "Wellington Racing Club's.meeting, was badly galloped .on during the running of that event. ' She to fulfil airy other engagements, and was in f-uch a bad way after the meeting that n long time may elapse before srho is fit to .race again. Two.of the fillies recently imported by Mr W. G. Stead, one by Marco and the other by Llangwin, have been put into work at Hastings, and are being exercised under the supervision of T. Quinlivan. It is reported from the north-that Mr M'Maiion', the "chief stipendiary steward, lias an inquiry on hand into the accident which befel First Glance during the running of the" Wellington Racing Club Handicap, on the second day of the Trentham fixture. A lot of evidence has been taken, but more is) yet required, and at present the inquiry stands adjourned. At the Forbury Park'Trotting Club's meeting on. Saturday, the..champion pacer, Our Thorpe,.. who was engaged in the'mile and a quarter"-race late in She day, was taken out, between the second and third races', to give an exhibition over a mile. The track was in perfect. order, and the weather conditions were most favourable for record breaking. Accompanied ' by a pacemaker, Our Thorpe started off smartly and got to the end of a furlong in. 16 1-osfec, reaching the quarter past in 32 3-osec. A few strides further on

the horse .-fell, turning a complete somersault. His driver, A. Fleming, who was thrown clour, was: quickly on his feet and attended to Our Thorpe, releasing him, with assistance, from the sulky. When he returned to the paddock the horse was covered with dirt from the track, while he was badly knocked about on the knees and head, and was bleeding at the nose. Tt was quite evident that he had had a very severe shaking. The mishap caused considerable regret to the spectators, who-were keenly interested in the speed trial. When the l .horse went on to the track they cheered wildly, and the enthusiasm was at fever heat during the progress of his preliminary and right up to the time of the accident. The mishap was very unfortunate for nil concerned. It prevented Our Thorpe from being started in the mile and a quarter race, which was the special, object of this. hi>; first trip to Forbury, and took all the interest out of the event, which was expected to he one of the chief attractions of the meeting. The injuries sustained by Our Thorpe may necessitate a lengthy snell. but it is to be hoped that they will not prove of a serious character, as it if? understood that his owner has been making arrangements for sending the horse to America in a few months' time.

The star performance at the Forbury Park Trotting Club's .meeting, on Saturday was'. registered' by Don. Caj&'ar, who .established an Australasian, race record for two miles.'when he won the Forbury Handicap in 4m.in 28 2-osec. He made little impression on the leaders in the early stages of the race, but over the last five furlongs' he showed exceptional brilliancy and staying powers. Evelyn and Succeed were still well clear two furlongs from home, but once in the straight Don Caesar paced like a champion and just caught Evelyn a. few strides from the post. Don Cresar showed great promise, as 1 a young horse, but throughout his career he has been a somewhat difficult- horse to train, and to this cause, was doubtless due the fact that he has not always raced consistently, although he has put up some brilliant performances. For some time past he lias been \inder the care of R. Allan, who lias handled the Prince Imperial gelding in all his best efforts on the track. The trainer has always - held a high opinion of Don Caesar, and Saturday's race amply confirmed his judgment, that it was only a matter of getting the horse really well, to prove that he was one of the best pacers in the Dominion. •In May. 1912, on the Forbury track. Emmeline cover'ed two miles in. 4min ,30?oc s and"Winsoon won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in November, 1914, in the same time. These were the two fastest winning performances in handicap events in Australasia. Last December, on Vie New Brighton track. Our Thorpe equalled the record of 4mm 30sec in the Tree for All race.

At the Otautau hack meeting on Wednesday, Abo won a double, having Can robin to chase him home on each occasion. Abo is an aged gelding by Finland—Zillah, while Canrobin is. a five-year-old by Canrobcrt- -Tomboy, bv Sou'-wester.

Brooksdale, who won a race at the Wairio meeting, was successful in the chief event at the Otautau hackfixture. Brooksdale is by Pallas — Bealey, and he looks as if he might develop into a useful performer. He is a half-brother to Redowa, who has scarcely acted up to the early expectations tliat were formed of her. Bealey, tho dam of the pair, is by Apremont/Queen Bee. .who also : produced Slow Tom and Ability, two useful performers over obstacles. Bealey was a smart galloper in. her day, winning a large number of sprint events on country courses, chiefly in the south. Caseshot. who won the Steeplechase at the Wairio meeting this month, captured a double at the Otautau .hack meeting on Wednesday. He opened out by easily beating two opponents over hurdles and later scored in the though only by. a head from Carnmore, who had won a maiden steeplechase earlier in the day. Caseshot is a North Island-bred gelding by Linstock, by Hotchkiss—Satanella. the dam of St Clements and St Paul. Caj-nmore, who gave Caseshot such a good race, is a gelding of uncertain age by Golden Vein, by Oanranald— Golden Crest. Many good performers bred at Stortyhurst trace to Golden Crest, among them being Autumnus, whose dam. Goldleaf, is a half-sister to Golden Vein. Radnor, who was at one time considered the best horse in Australia, has shown no form for a long time and at Caulfield on January 15 he finished last in the Anniversary Handicap. The Victorian sportsman, Mr L. Falkiner, must be regarded as very unlucky, as lie paid about i'oOOO for Radnor and Bon Ton nearly two years' ago and neither has won a race since' American sportsmen are purchasing horses very freely in England at present. On the first day of the Newmarket December sales they were well presented and one of *h© number, Mr

Salby, bought twenty-three horses of all ages.

Among the English trainers who commenced this year. with a big team was W. T. Robinson. He has nearly sixty horses in work, most of the number being two-year-olds, and owing to the scarcity of stable lads in England at the present time, he has to send them out in threo hatches daily. Most of the prominent trainers in England are short-handed, owing to the Targe number of stable. employees that have enlisted.

Thev occupied 50 2-osec over the last half mile, Melford claiming an advantage at the finish. ■ Silent Way and Kaniinobe were together at the end of six furlongs, which thev left behind in lmin 18sec. Bore (M'Seveney) jumped the two ponv hurdles rather wildly and then went once round the big hurdles. He o-ot too close in to some of the obstacles and his effort was oniy fair. Mortuk was responsible for a brilliant half mile on the grass, the distance being covered in 49se«. Deltonio beat Oincinnatns over a mile on the grass,. from a stand, in lmin 45 4-ssec.
