G. Wright)__tb the Prime Minister's letter! f A letter was read from Mr O. W. Nicoll, secretary of tfce Ashburton Oounty War Relief Fund, staging that the Ashburton Red Gross Society wad in no immediate want of funds an<J, that it would not be necessary to mak«i a grant of £2OO in anticipation of what profits might be made out of the combined Autumn .Show and Patriotio Carnival in March. A letter was iread from the Department of Internal Affairs' drawing the association's attention to the_lß&ce Meetings Act, 1909, which made it illegal for the association to run races in connection with the show -without a permit, and that if such races were held prosecutions would take place. It was pointed out that the pony races held in connection with the show were not run for money, .but purely fo* the enjoyment of the young people and the public generally. The letter was received. The secretary reported that a further Jist of special prizes had been offered, including the "Wakanui Cup, the Drummond Cup, the James Stringfellow Memorial Cup, the Ashburton Countr Racing Club's special prizes o* £lO 10s and £5 ss, and the Soundness Challenge Cup. He reported also that the sum of £lB 18a had already been contributed towards t-bie Past Presidents' Cup. ■
