WELLINGTON, January 29. At its sitting this morning of the Senate of the University the Degree and Commerce Examinations Committee brought up an interim report. It recommended that a. meeting should bo held between tho committee and the Society of Accountants; that no action should be taken, in tho direction of establishing a degree B Litt; that the aotion of the university agent should be confirmed in- the matter of the appointment of examiuers; that examiners should be appointed as recommended by the Board of Studies, viz. :—English—Professor Elton (Liverpool), Professor"'Moorman (Leeds), Professor Moore Smith (Sheffield), Professor Gregory Smith (Belfast), Professor Little Dale (Cardiff); Commercial. French and German—Professor Kastner (Manchester University), Professor Weckley (Nottingham University), Professor Alk'ms (London University), Professor Spiers (London University). The committee further recommended- that the statute relating to ..the-' degree of Doctor of Literature shbuld-l'be amended . so as "candidate for the degree of Doctor of Literature shall either (a) be a Master of Arts of the University of New Zealand or (b) hold a degree of that or somo other approved university substantially equivalent in the opinion of the Senate to the said degree, provided no candidate shall be accepted in virtue of: graduation at another university unless his thesis embodies the result of research either (a) of peculiar importance to New Zealand, or (b) is conducted at a college affiliated to the University of New Zealand and occupying at least two academic years, provided further that no candidate shall present himself for the degree until at least five years after admission to the first degree. A similar amendment of the statute relating to the degree of Doctor of Science also was proposed, further that nothing should be done respecting the institution of honours in Education pending a further report from the .Board of Studies, and that a, meeting of teachers of education be held during the next annual meeting of the Board of Studies. The recommendations regarding the degrees of Doctors of Literature and Science were held over for consideration at a later date. Tho other recommendations were adopted.
