THE CALL FOR MEN.

ELEVENTH EEINFORGEMEINTS.

CANTERBURY QUOTA 208 SHORT.

Only -two moro whole recruiting days are left before tho Canterbury Military District's- draft for tho Eleventh Roinforcemcnts begins to move into camp.' On Saturday morning the quota was 20S short, 11 mounted and 197 infantry being still required. During the four previous days tho district shortage wns reduced by 70 men, so that the task of getting 208 in two days is very remote. Consequently Canterbury will havo to face tho unwelcome fact that her quota, for the Eleventh will move into camp short of the required number. The Hon James Allen lias stated repeatedly that New Zealand's solemn promiso to tho Imperial Government must be kept at all costs. But the Defence officers say they cannot get the men for tho Eleventh Reinforcements. Not only that, bub a prominent member of tho local headquarters staff told' a reporter on Saturday morning that many men who had enlisted, been passed fib and put on tho strength of- tho Eleventh had now withdrawn their names. This, ho said, was a common occurrence, and the exasperating fact from the Defence point of view is that tho Department has absolutely no hold on such men. The following table shows the gross shortages of each group in the Canterbury Military District: — Mounted. Infantry. Tl.
