TWO MEN DROWNED

A BOATING TRAGEDY. [Per Press Association.* WHANGARISI, March 13

A holiday tragedy occurred yesterday afternoon in Panin Bay, twelve miles from-Wliangarci. ... Alfred B. Gann, aged twenty-eight, a Wliangarci. resident, and Ernest Chafloy, a settler at Kamo, went* to Fa run Bar on Thursday. Yesterday, Thomas Ryan, a settler, arranged to take them for a trip in Iris auxiliary oil launch. All started from the shore in a dinghy against the wind and tide, and when four boats’ length from the launch the dinghy swamped. Cbaffey, an elderly man, succeeded in swimming to the launch with difficulty and got aboard. Ho threw out ropes, but Cairn and Ryan wero unable to secure them and were drowned. Fishermen, hearing his cries, took oft C'haffey. The bodies of the others have been recovered. Cann, a traveller, had l>een in the Dominion for two years,- and leaves a wife and four children in England.

DROWNING AT POVERTY BAY. MAN’S BODY DISCOVERED ON BEACH. [Pkr Press Association.) GISBORNE, March 14. A drowning fatality occurred on the Kaiti beach some time between seven and eight o’clock on Saturday night, .James Hannigan, a married man, aged about forty-five, losing bis life. Hannigan., who was employed by Langlauds and Stnnnard, contractors for the breakwater extension, was in town on Saturday afternoon in company with Arthur Preston, another employee or the firm. The pair set out for their home on. tho Kaiti beach in a gig shortly before seven o’clock. Preston was dropped at his camp near l’a Hill, and Hannigan drove on alone to ins camp, *a mile and a half further on. This morning Hannigan’s dead body was discovered on tbo beach by two men out for a walk, while the horse was discovered lying dead across the shafts of the overturned gig some three chains further on.

It is presumed that the deceased got into difficulties at high tide, and that both mail and horse were drowned. The deceased leaves a widow, who resides at Brougham Street, Nelson. An inquest will bo hold to-morrow.

A BATHER’S DEATH. [Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND. March 14

Mr F. J. Moore, of Moore Avenue, Parnell, met his death while bathing at Waiheke Island yesterday. A companion went ashore for some purpose and looking round saw Mr Moore’s body floating in tho water. Apparently the causo of death was heart, failure.

SUICIDE AT MANAIA. [Per Press Association.] HAWERA, Ala roll 13. John James Kavanagh, aged 40, a married man, committed suicide at Mann ia this morning by hanging himself.

A YACHTSMAN DROWNED. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, March 14. A young man named Webber was drowned in the bay off Ravonsbourno yesterday afternoon. He fell off «i yacht and must have struck liis head in falling, as although he was a good swimmer he never came to the surface. '

FOUND DEAD. , BODY DISCOVERED ON RICCAR- • TON RACECOURSE. Joseph Watenburg, farmer, fiftythree years of age, residing at Yaldiiurst, was found dead on the Riccarton racecourse about 2.30 p.rn. yesterday. He was last seen alive by Richard! Skirteu at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, when he was lying asleep on the course close to tho spot where hia body was found yesterday. Tho body was not identified until last evening, when it was too late to conduct an inquest, which will bo held to-day. There were* no marks of violence on tlie body, ami it is supposed that Watenburg died of heart disease. He leaves a wife and family.

YOUTH FALLS FROM A BICYCLE,

About one o’clock yesterday Edward Selwyn 'Worthington, seventeen years of age, residing in Manchester Street, fell off his bicycle on Dyer's Pass Road. He received injuries to his head and was admitted to the Hospital. He was unconscious all the afternoon and evening, and art an early hour this morning Id's condition was reported to, bo very grave.

While taking part in the hop, step and jump event in the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills picnic, at Lees ton, on Saturday afternoon, W. Nimrod tripped u.n'd fell heavily, spraining his loft leg above the knee. Members of the Kaiapoi Ambulance Division rendered first aid and Drs Grawsjiaw and Volckmau attended the patient, who was sent to tire Christchurch Hospital by motor-car. A youth named Clarence Victor was admitted to the Hospital on Saturday morning, suffering from injuries to his light leg. He was employed by Air Alexander, of Belfast, and was raking hay with a. horse rake when the horse bolted and Victor was thrown from Iris seat.
