COUNTY COUNCILS.
GERALDINEi The Geraldine County Council metoa Wednesday; present—Colonel Mackenzie (chairman) and Messrs Flatman, Armitage and Mulvihill. The overseer reported that tho contractor for the Temuka bridge had driven the piles, and-had .filled the gabions. The report was adopted. Mr H. D. Auland waited upon the Council in support of a petition that a bridge might be erected over the Lynn River at Mount Peel. On the motion of Mr Armitage, it was decided to agree to contribute a pound for pound subsidy, up to £450 for a bridge according to the specification by Mr Dyer, the estimated cost being £9OO. Messrs Somerfield, M'Naughton, Bruce, Campbell and Charles attended as a deputation in support of a petition sighed by forty-one persons, asking for a bridge over the Kakahu River. On the motion of Mr Flatman, it was agreed to contribute a pound for pound subsidy up to £550 for a bridge estimated 'to cost £llOO. Messrs Brodio and Walls also waited on the Council asking for a bridge over the south branch of the Rangitata on the Main South Road. It was decided to ask the overseer of the Temuka Road Board tc provide an estimate of the cost of erect ing a bridge as requested. Mr J. G. Barry wrote complaining of tho bad state of the road at the approach to the lower Orari bridge, where raotor and bicycle traffic was continually being held up. The overseer was instructed to inspect the place'. The Levels county engineer wrote relative to the maintenance of the Hanging Rock bridge and the proposal to get the_ Government Commissioner to adjudicate on the matter of upkeep. It was decided to meet representatives of the Levels county at the next meeting of the Council, when the matter would bo discussed. Mr Gregan's tender oi £978 15s for the formation of the Te Moana-Kakahu water-race was accept* ed. The chairman was appointed th* Council's representative at a conference of delegates from the Ashburton, Geraldine and Levels County Councils and Road Boards to be held at the railway station at Rangitata on July 31, to consider the question of widening the stock bridge adjoining the railway bridge over the Rangitata. Accounts amounting to £824 7s werA pased for payment.
