(Abridged from Press Association Report.) I iEG IS LATI VE COUNCIL. Friday, July 17. AFTERNOON SITTING. The Council mot at 2.30 p.m. NEW COUNCILLORS. Tho Hons O. Samuel, J. Macgregor, R. K. Simpson, W. Morgan, R. Mooro, J. M'Gibbon and J. Fisher were sworn in. COMMITTEES. Tho usual sessional committees wore set up. FIRE BRIGADES. On the motion of the Hon F. 11. D. 8011, it was agreed that tho Fire Brigades Act Amendment Bill should be taken on the next sitting day. The Council rose at 2.45 p.m.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Friday, July 17. AFTERNOON SITTING. Tho House met at- 2.30 p.m. CHURCH PROPERTY. Mr G. M. Thomson moved the second reading of the Presbyterian Church Property Act, 1885, Amendment Bill, a measure for the more effective vesting in trustees of property held for the uso and purpose of any congregation of tlio Presbyterian Church. Mr Thomson explained that tho power asked for was necessary in view of the extension of the social side of tho Church's work, especially in tho direction of establishing orphanages and colleges.. The second reading passed without debate and the Bill was referred to the Committee of Selection. MOTOR TAX. Tho Hon A. L. Herdman introduced the ' Motor Regulation Bill, under which all motor-cars are to be licensed and registered. Drivers are also to be licensed. DEFAMATION. The Hon A. L. Herdman moved the second reading of the Defamation Bill. He was outlining the various clauses of the Bill when tho 5.30 adjournment was taken. EVENING SITTING. The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. The Hon A. L. Herdman proceeded with the explanation of the Defamation Bill. On a division tho second reading was carried by 33 to 21. The House rose at 11.30 p.m.
