EAST COAST RAILWAYS.

[p?BR PresS; Association.] ~«- jw-a WELLINGTON, June 3. Questioned regarding a report that the Government is moving surveyors and engineers from the Napier-Gisborn? line to the Waihi-Tauranga, the Minister of Public Works informed the " Lyttelton Times " correspondent that if correct it did not necessarily mean any slackening of the construction. Engineers and surveyors were constantly working but they completed work ahead of construction. A case in point occurred recently on the StratfordWhangamomona line. Strong complaints were being made about the removal of surveyors when as a matter of fact they had left behind them plans for a further £IOO,OOO worth of work. As to the Napier-Gisborno position he could not answer definitely until he had consulted his officers.
