SALEYARDS AT WAIAU.
TO BE ESTABLISHED SHORTLY.
MEETING OF SETTLERS.
A meeting of settlers and others interested was held in tho Waiau Library on Saturday eveni g under the auepices of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union to discuss the advisability of erecting saleyards. There was a. very good attendance and Mr E. Pi 11. Burbury was voted to the chair.
Mr Burbury after referring to the good work done at tlie recent meeting of the Provincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union, said that the question of snleyards had been occupying the attention of farmers for some time and it was for the meeting that night to decide what should bo done in the matter.
Letters were read from several Christchurch auctioneers. Some of the writers stated that it was advisable that tho saleyards should be owned by tho farmers themselves, but others thought that the matter was premature. and that the settlers should wait until tho railway was built to have proper conveniences for the trucking of stock. Some- writers pointed out also that it was not altogether good for the farmers to have a number of sales all-over the country as tho buyers were not able to attend them all.
A long discussion took place, the principal speakers being Messrs Beasley (Dalgetv and Co.), Buddie (Fletcher, Humphreys and Co.), Renald, Gale, Foster Ayrton, Baker /and Pettigrew. One speaker gave estimates as to the cost of building yards and Mr Baker presented statistics’ as to the number of sheep crossing the bridge for southern markets, a good many of which would possibly stay for sale in local vaids.
Mr Baker proposed:—“That it is advisable that saleyards be established.” The motion was seconded by Mr ■Pettigrew and carried unanimously. Mr E. Rennldi moved that a committee should be set up to canvass the district for support, to inquire into ways and means and into a suitable site. The motion was seconded by Mr Sunck.ell and carried. Mr Ayrton proposed that the committee should consist of nine members. Tho motion was seconded by Mr Lee and carried, and the following were elected: Messrs J. F. Banks, IT. T. Beaven, E. P. H. Burbury, P. Iverach, J. Lee, J. Little, P. A. M’Dougall, C. Netting and F. J. Pulley. At a subsequent meeting of tho committee Mr Burbury was elected chairman and Mr Beaven secretary. lib was agreed to meet on June 20at 2.30 p.m.
