DANGER SIGNALS.
PROVISION FOR CROSSINGS.
CIRCULAR TO LOCAL BODIES
For some time past the Railway Department has been considering the means of reducing the risk of accidents at level crossings, consequent on a dominion wide complaint led by a northern Chamber of Commerce. One of the conclusions evidently drawn from tlio evidence is that there should be better warning signals than the present “ Stop ! Look out for the Engine,” that is plac d on the railway lines. A circular has now Iwen issued to local bodies, including the City Council, offering to provide danger signals. The circular draws attention to a clause of tho Act of 1913 compelling the drivers of motor vehicles to slacken speed within lOOvds of a railway crossing, and states that, although’ there Is no obligation on the Department to do so, it has been deckled to supply local bodies with distinctive warning signs for erection on main roads about loOvds or 200yds distant from crossings. This action lias been dec ded on in view of the altered circumstances of road traction, and the local bodies are invited to co-ooerate. It is also a condition of tlio gift that tbe local bodies shall ma-'otain the signals. The circular has been referred to a committee of the Council.
