METALLING PAPANUI ROAD,

CITY COUNCIL CHARGES

OBJECTIONS BY TRAMWAY BOARD.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Tramway Board a letter was received from the City Council with reference to the dispute botwoen tho Board . and the Council over the cost of treating Papanui Road with tarred macadam. The letter stated that to put in the macadam excavations had been necessary, and a. soft clay boLtom had been met which had meant additional expenditure in further excavation to give the work a firm foundation- Tho lower cost quoted by the Tramway Board for work between the rails was explained by the fact that the sleepers formed a good foundation. The chairman (Mr J. A. Flesher) explained that the Council had quoted Is 8d per yard for four inches of tarred macadam when it had approached the Board, but the figures actually charged worked out at 3s 9RI per yard. There had been two inches more of tarred macadam put in than was at first arranged. Mr Gray said that ho did not like the idea of the Board disagreeing with another local body, but he did not think tho Board should pay the account of £143 from the Council. The City Council had approached the Board and invited it to co-operate in the work, amd the Board had agreed to have a trial niece of work carried cut on Pspanui Road. The Council had not treated the whole read a" nroposed. and the frst account, furnished to the Board was over That, had been reduced to £145. but tbe Beard ceuld do the work for from Is 8d to Is l Od per square yard for fonr inches.
