FARMERS’ UNION.
SOUTH CANTERBURY MEMBERS ' MEET. [Per Press Association.] TTMAR-U, May 23. At the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Provincial Farmers’ Union" to-day, the report mentioned that steps had been taken to import domestic help, the lack.of which made too heavy . a tax on fanners’ wives, especially, at . harvest time, and affected graingrowing. The Technical Schools’ shear- ' mg classes at the three centres had. been very successful, and wool classing also. Grain crops had rather been spoiled by rain, and the yields were disappointing. The production .was decreasing; and there was no need to agitate for a reduction of the Australian tariff on wheat, as there was not likely to be any export in that direction. On the other hand, wool and fat lambs were fetching good prices, and farmers were turning more attention to grazing and dairying. 71 Regarding domestic help, Information had been received that the lady who was to collect and bring out fifty, advised that it was impossible to get anything like that number, and many applicants must be disappointed. Two remits to the Dominion. Conference were adopted. L One was that the rule of the 7 road should be made the rule of the 7footpath in towns. 'Hie other was that the Farmers’ Union should have more representation on the Board of Agriculture, as being in closer touch with the farmers than the Agricultural' and Pastoral Associations, were. Mr John Talbot, was re-elected president and dominion delegate.
