CHESS BY TELEGRAPH. CANTERBURY v WELLINGTON CHESS CLUBS. A chess match hy telegraph between teams representing the Canterbury and Wellington. Chess Clubs was commenced on Saturday evening. Each team was quartered in its Toom, in which telegraphio instruments had been, installed. There were ten players A. Joseph was umpire for '•yu.ington in Christchurch, and Mr Tanner officiated for the Canterbury Club’s team in the Capital City. The scrutineers were Messrs Messenger, H. Langford and W. Black, and the telegTaph operating-was done by Mr H. Bennett, who has despatched messages for chess matches over the wire for seventeen years. The play was fast, and Mr Bennett remarked at the close of Saturday evenings work that never during his experience as telegraphist had such rapid plar and progress been made. The Wellington team' contains the present champion of the dominion, Mr W. E. Mason, and three evchampionsi, Messrs R. J. Barnes, W. Mackav and F. & Rolling. Mr E. H. Severne, of the looal team, who is pitted against the champion, commenced his game over the board at Wellington recently, on his way to Auckland. At the adjournment the game was equal. It will he resumed on Mr Severne’s return south. At the other boards, Wellington has a decided advantage in at least one game, but the positions at the other boards are fairly even. The match will be continued next Saturday evening. The following are the players and openings adopted, Canter bury representatives being given first: E, H. Severne v. W. E. Mason. Ruv Lopes - H. J.
