CHRISTCHURCH BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

The committee of the Christchurch Beautifying Association met yesterday; present—Mr A. Kaye (chairman), Dr Chilton, and Messrs R. Hill Fisher, J. A. Frostick, James Jamieson and E. Smith.

It was stated that the Association had asked permission from the City Council to continue tho planting of trees along Lin wood Avenue to tiie Linwood Park. Leave had been granted to plant the trees subject to the work being done to the satisfaction of the city surveyor, and to the consent of the Woolston Borough Council being obtained for that part of the avenue to the east of Aldwin's Road. Permission had been granted also to put in order tho triangle at the corner of Strickland Street, Spreydon. The Council could not see its way to grant permission for the planting of an avenue of silver birches in Selwyn Street. An application had been made to the Domains Board to allow the Association to plant native trees in that part of the Domain near the Carlton Bridge. Permission had not boon granted, however, owing mainly to the fact that the Board thought that any growth of shrubs might prove a harbour for undesirables. It was decided to inform the Board that it was intended to plant only varieties such as cabbage trees, ribbonwoods and kowhais. A letter was received from the Spreydon Beautifying Association thanking tho Association for the assistance received in the formation of tho former body. A suggestion was received from -the honorary curator (Mr H. G. Ell) that avenues of trees, such as double flowering may,'purple plum,, mountain ash. silver birch, laburnum and beech shun Id be planted in streets to be selected. It was also suggested that that portion of tho Wairarapa Stream from Garden Road to Leiiister Road might be graded and planted. It was resolved, that further information regarding these matters should be collected, and a tour of inspection madn before the end of tho present month.

An offer of bulbs had been made to tho Association, arid it was resolved to approach the City Council with a view to planting them in tho beds in Market Square. The matter e.f a. further grant to the Domains Board for tho purpose of continuing tho iron fence along Lincoln Road, and the question of tho tram shelter, were left over until the next •peeti-g.
