BY ORDER. 41.74- J. S'. SPURWAY, Secretary. Christchurch, ,12th May, 1914. A DISCLAIMER. To the Editor. {• Dear Sir, — In your report of the Bankruptcy proceedings re T. W. Stephenson, the Bankrupt is reported to have made the following statement : ".I was informed by the Agent, H. 11. Cook, who arranged the exchange, that he would find a cash buyer for the farm at £3O per acre, but he failed to do so.” It is becoming the fashion with every muddler who goes through the Bankruptcy Court to throw the blame on to “an exchange.” A few years ago it was invariably “ a sick wife and doctors’ bills ” —now it is an agent’s misrepresentation and commission charges. J These are the facts, which in justice to myself I ask you to publish. (1) I did not “arrange the exchange”; I did not see or talk to Mr Stephenson about the farm or any other matter before he. bought it. I therefore made no “ representations ” to him either true or false. (2) I have not seen cr spoken to Mr Stephenson since the exchange. 1 have never been on the farm, or seen it. I have never expressed an opinion as to its value either to Mr Stephenson or any one else. I have never "failed ’ to sell it at £3O or any other price, because I have never tried to sell it or been instructed to sel* it. (3) A Mr Yates, who was formerly in my employ, personally " arranged ” the whole matter; and the contract is in Mr'Yates’* writing. Mr Yates, authorises me on hit behalf to say, that lie never at any time told Mr Stephenson that he oould sell the farm for £3O or any other price./ (4) I have never received one penny ol commission for the > alleged exchange from Mr Stephenson, nor has Mr Yates. Yours faithfully, F.P. 4316 H. H. COOK. Linoleum, best quality, 12 x 12, cut and matched, for £1 16s. Railed free EO miles. H. Atkinson's, Cash Furnishers, 197 Manchester Street.
