The only fresh uevelopment in the iron trades strike is the issue of an appeal by the Labour Council for financial assistance for the thirty thousand to forty thousand men, women and children who shortly will need assistance. There is every possibility- that the next unionists’ strike will he by the painters. A special meeting will take place on Monday and a ballot on the question of ceasing work forthwith will bo taken. Under the current award painters are paid Is 4d an hour and signwriters Is 6d. They want increases to Is 6d and Is 7d. In view of Mr Justice Heydon’s decision that the iron trades’ case award cannot be re-opened, the painters practically have resolved on what they can do to gain increases.
