BIRDS AND PLANTS.
PLEA FOR THEIR PROTECTION. NEW SOCIETY FORMED. For several years Mr H. G. Eli, ALP., has had in hand the formation of a Socictv to protect native birds and plants, rlo has now succeeded and has issued a large number off circulars, asking residents of the dominion to become members of the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society. It is announced that tho Society has been called into existence to preserve native birds, protect reserves made in different parts of; tho dominion, and securo reserves in other parts. “Wild life and natural beauty,” the circular states, “ are a part of our common heritage. Wo cannot forfeit the pleasure afforded us by our wild birds and our forest reserves. The need for some organisation, through .chick the public may give expression to their views on this subject, has been felt for a long time. All lovers of the birds and tho forests, consequently, will welcome this Society.” Tho objects are set out as follow:
(1) To inculcate amongst the public, especially children, an intelligent interest in the native flora and fauna. (2) To secure tho conservation of native forests growing on roadsides, river banks and other public lands, and to secure protection for the same as far as possible. (3) To assist any movement, whether organised by private persons, local bodies or the State, for tho purpose of protecting any area of land covered with native forest 1 or other plant life. His Excellency tho Governor has consented to be patron of the Society and Lady Liverpool to he patroness. The president is Air G. H. Treadwell, of Wellington; the vice-president, Air L. O. H. Trinp, Wellington; honorary zoologist, Dr. AY. B. Bonham, F.R.S., Dunedin; honorary botanist, Dr L. Cockayne, F.R.S., Christchurch ; honorary treasurer, Air B. AI. Alolynoaux, Wellington ; honorary organising secretary, Air Ell; secretary, Air C. I. Dasent, Wellington. The members of the Council are:—Professor M. B. Kirk, Wellington; Mr G. E. Tolhurst, Wellington; Archdeacon Philip Walsh, Cambridge, Waikato; Airs H. AI. Campbell, Hastings, Hawke’s Bay; Air J. Drummond, F.L.S., Christchurch; Air H. Guthrie-Smith, Hawke’s Bay: Dr R. Fulton, Dunedin; Air G. AI. Thomson, ALP., Dunedin; Miss B. E. Banghan, Christchurch; and Dr J. A. Thomson, director of the Dominion Aluseum, Wellington. '
