BOROUGH COUNCILS.

ASHBURTON

The Ashburton Borough Council met on Monday evening; present—His AA’orship tho Mayor (Mr H. Davis), and Councillors J. T. M. Priest, F. Z. D. Ferriman, P. L. Orr, G. H. Buchanan, G. D. H. Hefford and J. B. Christian. The -Mayor reported that there was a debit to the temporary loans account of £3300, and a. debit balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £1578 15s lid, making an actual overdraft of £4878 15s lid. Amounts received since last meeting had aggregated £343 14s (id, tho principal items- being Government subsidy £152 10s 7d, electric power £6(3 13s 4d, rents £39 ss, Bomain account £27 10s, rates £27 8s fid.

Tho Mayor was re-appointed to represent tho Council on tho. Technical Classes ’Association. Leave of absenco was granted Captain Barber, of tho Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade, to attend the annual conference at Akaroa, and tho secretary was appointed to have charge of the brigade in the meantime. The Guide Committee's action in applying to the publishers of the Guide for an extension of timo for the supply of reading matter was approved. The question as to whether schools should be charged scavenging fees during holiday terms was referred to the Sanitary Committee.

The waterworks engineer reported that the extension of the water mains had been completed, and the contractors’ final payments were agreed to. Tho Mayor and Councillors Priest and Hefford word appointed to sign the .amended list of ratepayers on the municipal electoral roll. It was decided to ascertain from Dr Finch (District Health Officer) whether tho Council would bo permitted to erect, abattoirs on reserves near the riverbed, now in possession of Messrs Spring and Fletcher Bros. The question of an underground sewerage scheme for Ashburton was referred to the Sanitary Committee for a report. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the .chairman- reported that there was a

credit balance of £49 2s lOd: Amounts received since last meeting had aggregated £l7 2s 6d. Accounts amounting to £l2 13s 101 were passed for payment..
