POLITICAL NOTES.
[Fhom Oub Cobbespoxdent.] WELLINGTON, September 29 ALLENTON WORKERSDWELLINGS.
The Government has purchased fifteen acres of land for workers' dwellings at Allenton, Asliburton, and Mr Dickie, member for Selwyn, being satisfied that the scheme should be more extensively tried in the district, endeavoured to get the Labour Department to purchase an adjoining block on reasonable terms. He has,. however, been informed by the Minister of Labour that the land already purchased will more than meet requirements. The block already purchased will nrovide about sixty-four quarteracre 'sections. The purchase of large areas that are not required for immediate use would mean, adds the Minister, that the Government would have to load the sections to cover the interest and the purchase money and this would militate against the interests of those workers whom the Department is trying to assist in getting cheap and permanent homes.
